Check out what's new, Coach!
We hope your February is off to a good start and wish the best of luck to those of you who are holding district tournaments this month! If you haven't already, be sure to review the district deadlines and instructions page in the District Leader Toolkit.
2022 National Tournament Update
Our annual high school National Tournament will be held June 12-17, 2022, in Louisville, Kentucky. Registration for the National Tournament opens on March 15—as does the housing portal for reserving hotel rooms. More information, including COVID-19 protocols, will be available soon on our website: www.speechanddebate.org/nationals.
URGENT: Congress Legislation Submissions Needed
For the first time ever, students have the opportunity to write and directly submit their own legislation to be considered for the National Tournament docket. Students whose legislation is selected for debate will be recognized in Rostrum, receive a trophy, and will be awarded a $100 scholarship! This is an excellent opportunity for your students to have a say in what they debate and to shine light on the issues that are important to them and their communities. Encourage your students to submit legislation by February 15.
If your district tournament has particularly excellent legislation submitted for debate, please encourage the school/author to submit that legislation for consideration. Many students may need that extra bit of encouragement to feel like their legislation is worthy of consideration. It is a great way for a student to be recognized for their research, critical thinking, and writing skills. Remind them how great such an honor may look on a resume! Please email District and Tournament Services Manager Lauren McCool at firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any questions.
NEW Last-Chance Qualifier for All Districts-Eligible Students
The NSDA Last-Chance Qualifier is an opportunity for students who did not qualify through their district tournament to have a chance to attend the 2022 National Tournament. Students must be districts-eligible but do not need to have attended districts to participate; schools must have had at least one entry at districts. Participation is FREE, and all National Tournament main events and Big Questions will be offered. Enter up to four of your school’s students in each event for a chance to be a top-placing competitor at the Last-Chance Qualifier and earn a spot at the National Tournament! The NSDA Last-Chance Qualifier will be held online on May 5-7. Details and Registration »
Professional Development Offerings
We're searching for district leaders to participate in a working group to map out ideas about professional development options for experienced coaches. Topics include peer coaching, training assistant coaches, fundraising, and more. If you're interested in participating, please email Membership Manager Annie Reisener at email@example.com.
March 4 is National Speech and Debate Education Day! Held annually on the first Friday in March, NSDE Day recognizes teachers and students who are transforming tomorrow through speech and debate education. Teams across the country will join in the celebration, and we hope you'll be among them! Get the official guide to celebrating NSDE Day and access free resources to help plan how your district can celebrate the life-changing skills millions of students have gained through this activity.
