It provides information about water-related conferences, collaborative courses and field experiences, undergraduate research positions and internships, and other opportunities for students, faculty, and staff at the Universities of Wisconsin. Please share information on your campus.

Outreach Specialist/Bay of Green Bay NERR Tribal Engagement Convener
|
UW-Green Bay has a new position that will support the NERR designation and future work of the Bay of Green Bay NERR. The Outreach Specialist will build relationships and connections with tribal partners, help manage plan development, and work with the Director of Freshwater Strategy and the NERR steering committee on planning for the Bay of Green Bay NERR’s regional work and footprint. Deadline for applications is Monday, June 10.

Are you at ASLO this week? Check out our session Building Freshwater Knowledge and Networks on Thursday at 4 p.m., Meeting Room MN. It's going to be a fantastic session including:
Marissa Jablonski, Freshwater Collaborative, will talk about education and research to address Wisconsin's grand water challenges.
Sarah Vitale, UW-Eau Claire, will share how four Universities of Wisconsin institutions developed an interdisciplinary Freshwater Science Field Course for undergraduates to explore western Wisconsin.
Jill Coleman Wasik, UW-River Falls, will talk about how the Data Analysis and Monitoring Crew is training students and serves as a model for public-private partnerships.
Alison Mikulyuk, UW-Madison, will talk about the Freshwater@UW Summer Research Opportunities Program, which provides mentored research experiences at the Universities of Wisconsin for undergraduates from around the country.
Helen Schlimm, UW-Madison, will share how to deepen community participation in aquatic science.
John Magnuson, UW-Madison, will talk about the evolution of the first limnology course in North America.

Freshwater Collaborative courses are open to students enrolled at any UW university and offer students immersive field and lab work to prepare them for the workforce. Details and downloadable flyers are available on our website.

Field Sampling and Analysis, Door County and Land O' Lakes |
June 10 – June 21
Learn practical and hands-on environmental sampling, experiments and analysis. The course takes place on the Lowenwood campus in Land O’ Lakes and at the UW Oshkosh laboratory at Crossroads at Big Creek in Door County. 3 credits.

Fish Culture Techniques and Practices |
June 24 – July 20
Learn introductory fish culture techniques with a focus on model fish (zebrafish) and aquaculture fish for food or conservation (Lake sturgeon, yellow perch, and walleye). Takes place at UW-Milwaukee’s School of Freshwater Sciences. 3 credits.

Elements of Water, FRSHWTR 101 |
Summer: July 1 – Aug. 24 or Fall Semester: Sept. 3 – Dec. 12
This course addresses the importance of water in biological, ecological, physical, climate and economic systems, and the consequences of distributing the natural water cycle. Meets the Natural Science General Education Requirement. Open to high school students enrolled in the Early College Credit Program. Takes place at UW-Milwaukee’s School of Freshwater Sciences. 3 credits.

Introduction to Freshwater, BIO/EGR 119Q3

This introductory class is rooted in the signature question: How do people understand and create a more sustainable world? Students will achieve learning outcomes from presentations, readings, class discussions, and lecture, laboratory and field exercises. Takes place at UW Oshkosh. 3 credits.

Microbial Ecology, BIOL 312 |
Sept. 5 – Dec. 19
Students will explore how the environment shapes microbial communities and how microbes affect the environment while gaining hands on experience on topics related to metagenomics and microbial ecology techniques. Takes place at UW-River Falls. 3 credits.
