APRIL 2020

Dear Members and Friends,

We at Maryhill strongly believe in the power of art and community to sustain us during uncertain times. Despite being closed to the public, we are still working hard to connect with each of you and to find ways for you to connect with one another -- whether you are a teacher, a parent, an artist or someone who simply appreciates the important role that art plays in our daily lives.

We have several ways for you to get involved from home, from viewing our Teachers as Artists online exhibition, to taking a peek at the A Particular Beauty: Romanian Folk Clothing exhibition, or creating an art square for the Exquisitely Connected project.

Please join us. Now, more than ever, we need art and we need each other.

Stay well,

Colleen Schafroth
Executive Director

Maryhill Needs Your Support

Maryhill was on the brink of opening its doors for the 2020 season when the COVID19 pandemic hit the United States. Like many other small businesses and nonprofits in the community, Maryhill is suffering a significant loss of revenue. Your support now will help defray ongoing costs during our closure. If you are able, please consider making a donation online to help get us through this difficult time.
MARYHILL from HOME
A Particular Beauty: Romanian Folk Clothing
You can now take a virtual peek at the exhibition A Particular Beauty: Romanian Folk Clothing, which was scheduled to open March 15
Drawn from Maryhill’s collection of more than 450 items of Romanian clothing and textiles, the display includes fully dressed mannequins, and numerous individual garments such as coats, vests, shirts and blouses. The exhibition showcases a remarkable variety of Romanian embroidery techniques, mediums, and styles that have evolved over time.
A Particular Beauty will remain on view at Maryhill through November 15, 2021, giving ample time for the public to visit once the museum re-opens.
Exquisitely Connected: A Visual Art Community-Building Project
Remember The Exquisite Gorge Project? We’ve launched a new way for YOU to connect with other creatives from home.

Exquisitely Connected is a visual art community-building experience that's also inspired by the Surrealist parlor game, exquisite corpse, but this time we are inviting artists to create 8” x 8” artworks that will be connected digitally.

Our goal is to connect artists of all ages and abilities – virtually and literally – as each finished artwork becomes a part of a larger whole.

All you need are a few basic art supplies and your creativity. Tell us about what you are feeling now, the hopes you want to express for the future, or create a metaphor for today’s world experience. Let your imagination run wild as we create a web of connectivity!

Click here for info on creating your piece and how to upload it so you can be part of the fun. Artwork can be submitted now through June 30, 2020.
The idea is the brainchild of artist Molly Gaston Johnson, New Jersey, who was part of the Exquisite Gorge project; we thank her for her passion for art and communities.
Teachers As Artists: Women of Influence
Each year, Maryhill showcases teacher talent by inviting Washington and Oregon educators to participate in Teachers As Artists, a juried exhibition in the museum’s MJ Murdock Charitable Trust Education Center.
In 2020 we invited regional arts educators to submit work around the theme Women of Influence. We asked artists to examine women who have influenced their life and/or artwork, reflected through any media or style. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, we were not able to install the Washington portion of this exhibition, so we are presenting it online.
Click here to see the wonderful work submitted and read more about how each artist describes the women who have influenced their work.
Lisa Commander, Director of Education, The Columbia Gorge Discovery Museum, was the juror. She describes her process: “My rubric for judging works for the exhibit involved determining how well did the work represent the term influence, defined as “capacity to have an effect on the character, development, or behavior of someone or something.”  I asked myself how easily I was able to discern how each artist portrayed these three elements/themes in their work.”
Teachers as Artists is a partnership with Oregon Art Education Association and Washington Art Education Association. The exhibition featuring Oregon arts educators is scheduled for the fall. Click here for information on submissions.
