Resilience and Optimism
Incoming ASUPS president, Nicole Gherima Ramiro Cariño ’21, is a San Francisco native and Posse Scholar majoring in sociology and anthropology with minors in education studies and Latina/o studies. In addition to serving in student government, Nicole works in the School of Education and in experiential learning. One of her goals as ASUPS president is to continue to learn how to advocate not just for people but with them. “A president’s tone is especially important in times of crisis, so I will strive to embody resilience and optimism to help the student body hold on to hope as we plan for the fall,” she says.

All the Elements
Even with the disruption of the spring semester, staff members of the student-run science magazine, Elements, pulled together to produce an issue with stories about student interests, a special feature on eugenics, and research coverage on topics ranging from potatoes to peptides to Pacific Wrens.

LADY LUCK More than 450 species of ladybugs (or lady beetles, as many scientists prefer) are found in North America, including Harmonia axyridis, probably the most well-known and familiar, often with red wings dotted with black spots. This species was introduced in Washington by USDA agricultural research scientists in the 1970s and ’80s through releases in Chelan, Klickitat, and Yakima counties—all east of the Cascade Mountains—but the beetles chose to relocate to Western Washington. A symbol of good fortune in many cultures, ladybugs can be seen on campus throughout the spring and summer.
