UC San Diego Secures Several Top Spots in Latest National Rankings for NIH Funding |
The UC San Diego, School of Medicine solidified its status as a national leader in NIH funding, as reported by the 2023 Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research rankings. In total, the School of Medicine received more than $460 million in NIH grants in 2023, positioning it 5th among public institutions and 13th overall.

Moores Accepting Applications for Associate Director of Shared Resources |
This leadership position provides oversight of the Shared Resources at Moores and is open to current UC San Diego faculty who possess (1) extensive cancer relevant research experience, (2) a proven extramural funding track record, and (3) demonstrated management experience. New NIH Grant Development Support Available to UC San Diego Faculty and Staff |
Great science is not enough to secure NIH grants—grantspersonship skills also must be mastered. In addition to the grant development and submission support available to Moores Members from the Moores Grant Development Team and Pre-Award Research Administration, UC San Diego currently is piloting a 1-year institutional membership that gives faculty and staff free access to a suite of NIH grant development resources, created by the Bouvier Grant Group . These online, self-paced resources are a US$6,000 value and address F, K, P, R, and U series grants; typical submission mistakes and best practices; proposal checklists; and time management strategies, among other topics. Moreover, an “Ask the Grantwriting Expert'' virtual office hour component enables the ability to ask questions about submissions in real time.

Moores Member Inducted into the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) |
Dr. Ludmil Alexandrov, Member of the Moores Structural and Functional Genomics Research Program, was among the 162 new AIMBE Fellows who were recognized at the AIMBE Annual Event on March 25, 2024. Dr. Alexandrov develops next-generation computational tools and combines them with novel experimental techniques to elucidate how human cancers develop and grow, which has led to the development of improved strategies to prevent and treat cancer.

Research Spotlight: Shweta Joshi, PhD, Winner of the Cure Prize and CureBound Discovery Grant, 2023 |
Dr. Shweta Joshi was awarded the 2023 CurePrize for translating foundational preclinical studies, which resulted from collaboration between Dr. Joshi and Dr. Andy Lowy, which will determine whether combining Fostamatinib, an FDA-approved drug that blocks Syk function, with chemotherapy prior to surgery improves patient outcomes. Moreover, Dr. Joshi was awarded the 2023 CureBound Discovery 2023 with Dr. Dan Kaufman. Their project investigates whether targeting immunosuppressive myeloid cells can enhance responses to anti-GD2 immunotherapy and explores the combination of “off-the-shelf” human iPSC-derived natural killer cells to improve survival of children with neuroblastoma.

Triple Negative Breast Cancer Research Foundation (TNBCF)-AACR NextGen Grant for Transformative Cancer Research |
This grant is the AACR’s flagship funding initiative to stimulate highly innovative research from young investigators through supporting creative, paradigm shifting cancer research that may not be funded through conventional channels. Proposed projects must catalyze tangible scientific discoveries and help talented young investigators gain scientific independence. Although proposed research may be basic, translational, or clinical in nature, in any area of cancer research, the 2024 TNBCF-AACR NextGen Grant will be awarded to projects that address only triple negative breast cancer.

COE was proud to support this symposium produced by consortium partner SDSU's School of Public Health, titled "Cancer Health Disparities: Challenges and Opportunities From Bench to Community" on the evening of April 11, 2024. Audience members (1) heard the latest research updates in the field of cancer health disparities from Moores Associate Director of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, Dr. Melody Schiaffino; Co-Director, Center for Health Equity Education and Research, Dr. Mateo Banegas; and Medical Oncologist and Assistant Professor of Medicine, Dr. Angelique Richardson and (2) discussed how public health practitioners, researchers and community members can bridge the gaps and pave the way for equitable health outcomes.
