Incorporating Evidence-Based Treatments for Veterans with Trauma in Treatment Court Programs

Research shows that Veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are more likely to become involved in the criminal legal system than those without PTSD. For Veterans treatment court programs (and other adult treatment court programs) seeking to incorporate evidence-based practices for PTSD, there are over 400 different treatments, but only 3 have been consistently replicated as being effective: cognitive processing therapy, prolonged exposure, and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing. All three treatments are effective for simple PTSD, but not all are effective for complex PTSD, which is very common among Veterans.
This webinar will provide information on how to make the distinction between PTSD and complex PTSD in Veterans and then discuss the best evidence-based treatments for both. It will also discuss some of the strengths and challenges of each treatment and why, in a patient-centered world, agencies need to have clinicians trained in all of them.
