7 Ways to Stay Healthy in The New Year

  1. Stay up-to-date with vaccines, including the recent COVID-19 boosters. Flu, RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) and COVID-19 are all spreading in our communities, so take measures to protect yourself and others. Vaccination is one of the best ways to avoid serious illness.

  2. Eat healthy. Fill your plate with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts, low-fat dairy, fish and lean meats. These foods, unlike boxed and processed foods, have important nutrients that are easier for your body to digest, which means you’ll feel better overall.

  3. Get moving for 30 minutes most days of the week. If you’re short on time, 10-minute bursts of activity counts. Find activities that you enjoy whether it’s jogging, walking, dancing, taking a bike ride, tennis, yoga, swimming, among others. Find a workout partner to keep you motivated. Routine exercise also helps boost your mental health.

  4. Don’t skimp on sleep. Adults need around 8 hours of restful sleep a night, but if you’re like most Americans, chances are you aren’t always getting enough. A good night’s rest supports healthy brain function and physical health. Not getting enough sleep has been linked to accidents, heart disease, anxiety and many other conditions.

  5. Don’t use tobacco or vape. If you do, set a date to quit. It may take a few tries, but you can do it. It’s never too late to gain the benefits of quitting. Doing so will fairly quickly lower your risk of heart disease, stroke and cancer. Learn more.

  6. Carve out some downtime to unwind. Life gets busy. Sometimes too busy. Learn to strike the right balance so you feel less overwhelmed and can do the things that make you happy and feel fulfilled. For example, volunteering in your community, spending time with friends, listening to music, taking up a hobby or trying something new are ideas to help manage stress.

  7. Schedule wellness visits and important health screenings. Stay current with yearly physical exams, eye exams, dental cleanings and health screenings. Don’t forget to include your colonoscopy and mammograms, if needed. It’s the best way to pick up on any health issues early.
