Advancing Oral Health Equity for Unaccompanied Immigrant Minors Through Community Partnership |
|
|
Dr. Waleed Omar, one of the pediatrics residents in the Center for Global Health’s Graduate Global Health Program, recently developed and implemented a project to promote oral health equity for immigrant minors under the guidance of CGH faculty Dr. Sarah Messmer. Unaccompanied immigrant minors face significant oral health disparities due to trauma, language barriers, and limited resources. Untreated dental disease often impairs their nutrition, speech, and school performance. Through partnerships with the UIC College of Dentistry and the Maryville Academy and funded by the CATCH grant, the initiative provided over 250 oral hygiene kits and interactive educational sessions for over two dozen minors, empowering both youth and their foster parents with preventive knowledge to improve oral health and advance health equity.
