Grant to expand immunotherapy efficacy
The Robert J. Kleberg, Jr. and Helen C. Kleberg Foundation has awarded a $1 million grant to Robert Coffey (Cell and Developmental Biology) and Ken Lau (CDB) on colorectal cancer immunotherapy.

Ellis named 2024 Vanderbilt Prize Student Scholar
Kimberlyn Ellis (Human Genetics), has been selected as the 2024 Vanderbilt Prize Student Scholar. She will receive a cash prize and will be mentored by the recipient of the 2024 Vanderbilt Prize in Biomedical Science, Sarah Tishkoff from the University of Pennsylvania. Ellis will be recognized during Tishkoff’s Discovery Lecture on March 6, 2025.

Jumper, Vanderbilt alum, wins Nobel Prize in Chemistry
John M. Jumper, BS’07, creator of AlphaFold2, is one of three scientists awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry "for protein structure prediction." With AF2's help, scientists can predict the structure of virtually all 200 million identified proteins. Among a myriad of applications, researchers can better understand antibiotic resistance and create images of plastic-decomposing enzymes.

Tuesday, Oct. 29: Funding and Commercialization Support for Scientist Entrepreneurs and Early-Stage Startups Swamy Tripurani, NIH National Cancer Institute program director, will discuss SBIR/STTR funding to support scientist entrepreneurs and innovators with early-stage startups. Tripurani will also be available to meet on a one-on-one basis. 9:30 a.m.–10:30 a.m., Engineering and Science Building 044. Register online.
Wednesday, Oct. 30: Apex Lecture Series: Agnel Sfeir, Sloan Kettering Institute Sfeir's talk, "Two Genomes, One Balance: Mitochondrial and Nuclear DNA Stability" will delve into her research program including the evolutionary benefits of the microhomology-mediated end-joining repair pathway that fixes DNA breaks in the nuclear genome. 2:00 p.m.–3:00 p.m., Light Hall 202. A reception will follow in Light Hall 618.
