Red Wine Rendezvous at Bistro 1682

It is a delicious affair at Bistro 1682 on the 26th of May as we celebrate all that is hearty and comforting about smooth red wine and robust and flavourful food.

Join us for 3 courses of generosity prepared by Chef Kerry Kilpin as well as a selection of Steenberg red wines. The menu features Creamy Corn and Bacon Soup with smoked paprika served with crusty homemade bread, Slow Braised Lamb Neck with fluffy mashed potato, sweet glazed carrots and tender greens. If you can manage it, tuck into Date and Cinnamon Bread and Butter Pudding with a delectable toffee sauce and "hot cross bun" ice cream.

The cost is R375 per person and includes a welcome glass of 1682 Pinot Noir MCC, 3 course dinner with red wine and gratuity. Extras to be charged accordingly.

Archie Maclean - New Executive Chef at Catharina's Restaurant

Introducing Archie Maclean - Our new Executive Chef at Catharina's. Archie was born and raised in Scotland. His culinary career was sparked by cooking in a small pub and was elevated while working under Michelin starred chef, David Evans.

Archie's further work experience includes The Gleneagles Hotel in Scotland, 41 Restaurant in Sydney, The Tasting Room at le Quartier Francais and Singita in Mpumalanga. Chef Archie will begin his next chapter at the helm of Catharina's and we can only imagine the delicious menus he will be putting together. Stay tuned!

Farm Update - Merlot Block J

We have 8 blocks of beautiful Merlot vines on our farm, but at the end of our 2016 harvest, we had to say goodbye to our Merlot Block J which was planted in 1995. This block had fallen victim to a disease called leafroll which causes the leaf of the vine to roll, thereby decreasing the surface area of the leaf which results in less exposure to the sun which lengthens the ripening period of the grape. Our Merlot has shown great class and pedigree over the years, winning a Double Gold Veritas Award and Young Winemaker of the Year.

For the next 8 months we will kill the nematodes in the stump of the vine with a friendly herbicide, this will also kill the mealybug which carries the leafroll virus. If all goes well, we will dig up the dead stumps, plough the soil and plant new vines in June - August 2017.
