Native & Indigenous American History Month
|
During Native & Indigenous American History Month we highlight the Lenape, also known as the Delaware, who historically inhabited the New Jersey region. Today, three tribes have state recognition in New Jersey: the Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape Tribal Nation, the Powhatan Renape Nation, and the Ramapough Lenape Nation. Other tribes and groups associated with the region include the Munsee, Nanticoke, and various Lenape-related communities.

We continue to be inspired by our SHU Reads! book The Serviceberry: Abundance and Reciprocity in the Natural World by indigenous scientist and author Robin Wall Kimmerer. Here are some upcoming events inspired by Kimmerer's ethic of reciprocity, sustainability, interconnectedness, and gratitude:

Join the Office of Campus Inclusion and the Office of International Programs on November 18 at 5 pm for an evening of global fun and connection at International Game Night! Enjoy a global-themed Kahoot and games from around the world while meeting fellow students, learning about different cultures, and sharing plenty of laughs along the way.

On November 19, we celebrate Native American Heritage Month with a special movie trivia night honoring Indigenous stories, voices, and cultures. We’ll be featuring a film that highlights Native perspectives, and you'll help us choose which one. Vote today at shu_campusinclusion on Instagram.

The Campus Inclusion and Community Center supports the University Strategic Plan in advancing hospitality, dialogue, diversity, equity, inclusion, and service to others—regardless of one's background or belief. The learning space will foster a genuine sense of community, where every member feels part of an inclusive whole, built on mutual respect and appreciation. Hats Off to Downtown
Head to South Orange Downtown on Friday, November 14 from 5–8 p.m. for Hats Off to Downtown, a fun district-wide shopping crawl celebrating local businesses. Stroll through downtown to shop exclusive deals, enjoy giveaways, tastings, restaurant specials, and music from DJ Phillip Lee. Start the night at The Co-Lab (57 S Orange Ave) to pick up an event passport and tokens to drop at each business visited—each token earns a raffle entry for a chance to win great prizes, no purchase necessary. Creative hats are encouraged for a shot at the Best Hat Contest. The event is free to attend, with RSVP recommended at southorangedowntown.org/hats-off.
