Hey Digesteers!
07.24.16
Greetings! It was a placid July afternoon here at the Library. Lovin' Spoonful on the hi-fi—this song. Then the news came - another Fire!
Large parts of our community has thus plunged from the top (i.e. listening to Lovin' Spoonful) of the Hierarchy of Needs pyramid and are now occupying the 'Safety' while others are battling in the 'Physiological!'

One of the best places to get updates and good links about the current crisis: Big Sur Kate: HERE
As you know we've had too many destructive fires in Big Sur lately. That hazy sky, the smell of smoke, the sense of helplessness when friends in need are inaccessible, the layer of ash, the eerily beautiful light (especially the sunset) and the knot in your stomach. Your mind racing through the various places where fire clearance can be improved, deep gratitude for the Big Sur Volunteers Fire Brigade and all the other firefighters from around the state and country, the frustration of not being able to fully comprehend reports because of a vague knowledge about exactly where green, long, rocky, palo, bixby, creeks and ridges all intersect and interact higher up and further east. A grapevine fairly vibrating with pent up need for true information: Thank God for a 'portal' like Big Sur Kate.
The above sampling of feelings and recognitions come form having been thru this too many times!

Life is now governed by the fire but the highway is still open, we still have power and the Library is open today!

So...the below news and programs take on a pale hue (again witness the Pyramid) in comparison to what is going on outside our front porches. We will update you as to whether any cancellations and/or postponements will happen. Please visit www.henrymiller.org for updates
July 28 - Sailing Around with World with Magnus!
Imagine Benny Anderson, Mai Tai in hand, reading a particularly dramatic excerpt from Two Years Before the Mast in the galley of the Love Boat.
That's marginally what you can expect on Thursday, July 28th, when you'll have the pleasure of "Sailing Around the World With Magnus!"
Indeed, Magnus has sailed around the world since he was a child. Join him for an evening as he spins riveting yarns about his adventures—some, quite literally life-or-death—on the high seas, plus a sprinkling of maritime history, and much more! Fun for the whole family!
Reserve your spot HERE or by calling 831-667-2574. And check out this exclusive clip* below!

An incisive chat with Henry in the Paris Review!!
INTERVIEWER: You said earlier there’s something inside you that takes over?

MILLER: Yes, of course. Listen. Who writes the great books? It isn’t we who sign our names. What is an artist? He’s a man who has antennae, who knows how to hook up to the currents which are in the atmosphere, in the cosmos; he merely has the facility for hooking on, as it were....

Who is original? Everything that we are doing, everything that we think, exists already, and we are only intermediaries, that’s all, who make use of what is in the air....

Yes, Cluster played here --
and we can prove it!
Last week a guest saw the Cluster poster at the Library and said, "Is that the [famous German experimental band] Cluster?
Mike: Yep.
Guest: They played here?
Mike: Yep. In 2007.
Guest: But they don't play concerts. They never play out.
Mike: They did! And here's proof!*

Henry Miller & James Joyce: A Painful Case of Envy
Jack Kahane, publisher of Miller’s first book, Tropic of Cancer had urged Miller to write a “brochure” about his famous contemporaries—Joyce, Proust, and Lawrence—to pave the way for the reception of the work.
Miller balked at the idea. Why should he be placed in the position of a sycophantic follower?
But at Kahane’s further insistence, he finally gave way and feverishly began to jot down notes that were to form the basis of that brochure.
When Miller set out to write his brochure, Proust, Joyce, and Lawrence were, presumably, going to be the targets of his attack.
But we now know that is not what happened: Lawrence became an icon, and Proust was let off easily, but when it came to Joyce, Miller dropped all restraint.  Oh, snap!  Do READ ON!
GOOD NEWS!

In these times of kindle and audible it is wonderful to receive good real book news!

Our friends at New Directions have decided to issue a new edition of Henry's book "The Wisdom of The Heart."
It will be available here at the Library August 23!
"Life, as we all know, is conflict, and man, being part of life, is himself an expression of conflict. If he recognizes the fact and accepts it, he is apt, despite the conflict, to know peace and to enjoy it. But to arrive at this end, which is only a beginning (for we haven’t begun to live yet!), a man has got to learn the doctrine of acceptance, that is, of unconditional surrender, which is love."   Henry Miller, Wisdom of The Heart
