THREE DAYS UNTIL NEXT FUNDING DEADLINE, NEGOTIATIONS ONGOING

There are just three days until Congress reaches the deadline to pass the last funding bill for FY26. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is the only agency that has yet to receive its full-year funding after Congress recently passed a five-bill package that only extended DHS funding through this week. Now, according to reporting from The Hill, Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) indicated plans could move forward with a second continuing resolution (CR) to fund the department.

DOE ANNOUNCES GENESIS MISSION CONSORTIUM

The Department of Energy (DOE) announced yesterday its plans to launch the Genesis Mission Consortium, a new public-private partnership aimed toward advancing its Genesis Mission, to "harness the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to accelerate scientific discovery, strengthen national security, and ensure America leads in energy and emerging technologies." In its announcement, the Department said that the consortium will comprise of technical capabilities and expertise from the Department of Energy, National Laboratories, private sector leaders and academic institutions. The consortium will act as a shared coordination point that helps members team up, pursue funding, and track progress. It will also support technical work through focused groups and regular events that bring people together to develop and test new ideas.

NASA ADMINISTRATOR ANNOUNCES DIRECTIVE

Last week, NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman issued a directive to bolster NASA’s workforce capacity. The directive “establishes actions to rebuild internal talent, strengthen contractual provisions, and foster a culture of technical resilience.” This will include developing a strategy for academic recruitment. In his announcement, Isaacman noted this plan seeks to fulfill President Donald Trump’s Executive Order from last year on Ensuring American Space Superiority. The directive calls for NASA Center Directors and senior leaders to take specific actions within 30–60 days to grow a civil‑service workforce supported by contractors and international and commercial partners.
