Looking to boost your spring semester? Here's some advice from current Dornsife seniors.
COOPER BROWN is a senior in Dornsife's East Asian Area Studies, B.A. and Annenberg's Communication, B.A.
-
Stay informed. Subscribe to newsletters from organizations that interest you and do some research. You never know what will come your way! And looking up local theaters and getting their communications can inform you about screenings and other cool events.
-
Volunteer. Donating your time not only helps you do some good, but it can help you learn new skills too! It can also create long-lasting relationships with close-knit communities.
-
Make time for yourself. After committing to extracurriculars, it can become hard finding time to do homework and decompress. Don't forget to dedicate time each day for solo work, relaxation, and especially sleep.
-
Leverage relationships with professors. Attend office hours, ask questions, and express interest in their research. Professors often appreciate students who are proactive, and they may be more likely to share research opportunities if you show a genuine passion for the subject.
-
Look for internships and summer programs. Many labs and research projects offer paid or volunteer internships, especially during summer. They're a great way to gain hands-on experience!
- Network with upperclassmen. Upperclassmen can provide valuable insights and might even know of research opportunities that are not widely advertised. Ask them how they found those opportunities and see if they have recommendations.
| MIGUEL MERCADO is a senior double-majoring in Dornsife's Mathematics, B.A. and Physics, B.A.
