New Hours Starting this Month

As we welcome September, we are now open Friday and Saturday from 10 am to 9 pm. Our Illuminated Fountain Performances on Friday and Saturday evenings will now start at 8:15 pm. We will continue to be open Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 10 am to 6 pm. Remember, Member reservations are required to visit the Gardens (except for Gardens Premium Members).

The historic Webb Farmhouse has stood on the property since the mid-1700s and in 2014 was selectively restored to serve as a gallery space. William Webb, the probable builder of the house, was born in Gloucester, England sometime between 1684-90, and arrived in Chester County with his parents around 1700. Webb eventually purchased 301 acres of land that made up part of today’s Meadow Garden, and in 1741 he was gifted another 203 acres. Early settlers like Webb used the land to grow crops and raise livestock. After Pierre S. du Pont purchased the Longwood property and several adjacent pieces of land, two of his significant purchases, the Merrick farm and the Webb farm, became central to his agricultural activities. Du Pont continued to use the land for agricultural purposes for many years and retained the existing woodlands as a buffer between the formal gardens and the farm fields. Today, the farmhouse’s two galleries showcase the beauty of the Meadow Garden through the seasons, as well as share the story of the people who have inhabited and influenced the land since the Lenni Lenape.

My husband, Tom, and I have been going to Longwood for over 40 years (both Members several years ago since we go 4 or 5 times each year from New Jersey). With so many beautiful events and new and old things to see, we look forward to each time we go. Prior to that, both our parents brought us to Longwood back in the late 50's when we were both small. Over the years, we saw so many amazing changes, always improving and reinventing ... we have so many photos, we can probably have 50 books of Longwood pictures (all beautiful, even with today's new cameras)! The different seasons are so outstanding and change each year ... still love going there!
