A NOTE FROM VC SATTERLUND |
Dear Student Affairs Colleagues and Friends, |
Happy New Year!
I hope you were able to enjoy some rest and have a bit of fun during the last few weeks. As we look forward to the coming year, I imagine that we will face a few challenges together. Even so, I remain optimistic about our work together, as I have seen firsthand what you all are able to accomplish each day in support of our fantastic students and dedicated colleagues.
Please take care of yourselves and check out the opportunities below for professional engagement, learning, and development; as well as introductions to new colleagues who have recently joined our impactful team.

MLK Day of Service and Parade |
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade and Day of Service Committee invites staff, faculty and students to join UC San Diego in the campus traditions of serving our local community and marching in the 42nd Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade this weekend!
Day of Service - Saturday, January 13
Mission Bay High School
Service projects will consist of continuing to develop the sensory garden for special education students, painting a mural, creating a space for their new peer tutoring program, and much-needed general maintenance and clean-up around campus. A continental breakfast, lunch, and volunteer t-shirt will be provided to all participants.
Parade - Sunday, January 14
Embarcadero, Downtown San Diego
The UC San Diego contingent will be led by a large "UC San Diego" banner, followed by the UC San Diego Pep Band, the Eight Colleges, and members of the campus community. Departments and organizations are encouraged to showcase their own banners, letters, and signage while we march in the parade.
For more detailed information and to register for either event, please visit: mlkday.ucsd.edu.

January is National Mentoring Month |
National Mentoring Month is an annual, nationwide celebration of the power of supportive and meaningful mentorship relationships. At UC San Diego, the Online Student Experience department plans National Mentoring Month by coordinating a series of events and workshops in collaboration with our campus partners and mentoring programs. I encourage you to explore the full calendar of this year’s events on the National Mentoring Month website.
Second Annual Celebration Luncheon
As a culmination of the diverse events hosted throughout National Mentoring Month, Online Student Experience will host a celebratory luncheon on Wednesday, January 31, 2024. This gathering serves as a focal point for community connection and recognition of all the various mentorship efforts across our university.
For any questions or comments regarding National Mentoring Month, please reach out to Angie Garcia Nevarez via email.
|
UC San Diego's annual Student Well Fest will take place on January 24, 2024, aimed at promoting student wellness and overall well-being on campus.
The event – which is centered around the eight dimensions of well-being – will feature a variety of activities, workshops, and resources designed to support students' mental, physical, and emotional health.
Please reach out to Christine Glissmann (cglissmann@ucsd.edu) with any questions.

Training Sessions: Supporting Students in Distress |
Student Affairs Case Management Services will facilitate three upcoming training sessions for “Creating a Culture of Care: Supporting Students in Distress” in Winter Quarter – on Jan. 11, Feb. 8, and March 14.
These free, interactive trainings are designed to assist staff in recognizing and supporting students in distress – defined as: a student whose academic progress or functioning in the university environment is adversely affected due to a number of indicators that are impacting their well-being and/or the well-being of others.
To complete the training, individuals only need to attend one of the scheduled dates. To register for one of these sessions, visit this link on UC Learning (login required).

Medical Amnesty Program Training Module |
The Center for Student Accountability, Growth, and Education (SAGE) has recently developed a training module for UC San Diego’s Medical Amnesty Program, which is now available on UC Learning.
This short module is full of helpful information about the program and how it applies to students, and can be found by searching for "MAP" or "Medical Amnesty Program" in the UC Learning platform.
The purpose of the Medical Amnesty Program (MAP) is to reduce the barriers to seeking medical assistance for emergencies involving alcohol, controlled substances, and communicable diseases with public health implications, while promoting community wellbeing and safety.

Please join me in officially welcoming Elizabeth (Liz) Landridge-Noti to the Student Affairs team. After a national search, Liz accepted an offer to serve as the inaugural Director of Global Research and Academic Programs in Global Initiatives. In this role, she will strengthen Global Initiatives' connection to UC San Diego’s academic and research arms, with a portfolio that will include globalization of the curriculum, funding for global research and global learning opportunities, and the creation and oversight of a faculty advisory board, among other responsibilities.
Liz previously served as Director of Faculty Engagement in Global Affairs at UC Davis.

I am also pleased to announce that Chrystian Smith has been named the inaugural Creating a Culture of Care Manager in Student Affairs Case Management Services (SACM). In this role, Chrystian will lead SACM programs and initiatives such as Triton2Triton, Togetherall, the Student Well Fest, and more. They will also expand outreach and training efforts related to creating a more student-centered, equity-driven, and trauma-informed culture of care at UC San Diego.

Triton Days: Open House and Transfer Celebrations
|
April 13, 2024
May 3 and 17, 2024
This spring, UC San Diego will host one Triton Days Open House event on Saturday, April 13, 2024. Tailored to engage both admitted first-year students AND transfer applicants, we have combined our signature events to allow for broader campus participation in celebrating newly admitted first-year students, while also providing transfer applicants the opportunity to discover the Triton experience prior to the decision deadline for other institutions. Triton Days will provide all participants an immersive experience of campus life including tours, academic insights and more.
Following the Triton Days Open House in April, we will host two Transfer Celebration events on Friday, May 3 and 17, exclusively for admitted transfer students. At these smaller-scale events, the campus community will have the opportunity to engage with admitted transfers while tabling at the academic department and student support services resource fair.
To learn more – and register for an information session this Wednesday – please see the recent Triton Days Campus Notice.
