WashU faculty Chien-Ju Ho and Wouter Kool are fascinated by the interplay between humans and the AI algorithms that our decisions help to train. They've published their first study exploring how people modify their behavior when knowingly interacting with artificial intelligence.

Named a “pop culture icon” by USA Today, Sanjay Gupta, MD, is perhaps the most media-savvy physician working today. Gupta is a broadcaster, writer, podcaster and web-contributor, all of which places him in a unique position to examine why certain health-related stories make the headlines and others don’t. In this presentation, he takes a hard look at the media’s role in conveying sometimes frightening information, such as the H1N1 global pandemic and the post-9/11 incidents involving anthrax.

This workshop will be run by Ian Bogost, co-director of the Program in Public Scholarship and a contributing writer at The Atlantic who frequently writes about technology and AI. Participants will be guided through the process of writing short pieces on how AI is transforming their field of study and the industries or practices they touch, with an eye toward submitting this work to public-facing outlets.

This workshop is designed to help faculty with the pitching, drafting, and editing processes involved in writing for The Conversation. By the end of this two-hour workshop, participants will have identified a suitable topic from their research and drafted (possibly even submitted) a pitch.

This talk examines the scale and nature of dependence of social science research on Twitter. While the collapse of access to Twitter data is disastrous for behavioral research on social media, it also offers a moment to construct new data access paradigms that will generate more diverse research. The talk will cover four data paradigms, none of which offer the full answer, but together may serve to push the field forward.

The Center for the Literary Arts is pleased to announce the Fall 2024 call for the WashU Creative Practice Workshop. This interdisciplinary workshop will provide an opportunity for WashU faculty across various fields to collaborate, produce, and share work, while also providing a semester leave and dedicated workspace. The application deadline is December 1, 2023.

The William H. Danforth St. Louis Confluence Award is designed to elevate WashU’s investment in the St. Louis Region by encouraging and rewarding faculty research that enhances our impact in St. Louis. The St. Louis Confluence Award will honor and recognize faculty members for recent, active research that employs interdisciplinary, community-engaged methods to create impact in the region. A $50,000 cash prize will be given in recognition of faculty research initiatives. All current WashU faculty, across all tracks, are invited to submit an application and/or nominate a peer.

| The Symposium will feature more than one dozen Washington University faculty sharing compelling stories from their recent research across a variety of disciplines. These narratives provide a glimpse into the sheer breadth of digital transformation efforts happening across the WashU ecosystem, and offer an ideal entry point for potential collaborations.
