A WEEKLY DIGEST OF NEED-TO-KNOW FOR THE LEADERS OF ESD 105 |
Thanksgiving is a day of pause amidst our busy lives to reflect on those things in life that bring us the most joy, comfort & strength. When we sit around the table to dine on our turkey feasts, most people mention other people as what they are most grateful for.
Â
To our region's students, our schools are the constant. In all that you do in your buildings, you provide opportunities to experience the joy of learning, comfort to students on their hardest days and you teach them how to exercise their greatest strength, their own resilience. At the ESD 105, we are most thankful for you and the work you do in our schools, with our students and families, to shape the future of our communities. Thank you for all you do to make a significant difference! 🦃Â

Naloxone Awareness Campaign |
Â
According to the Yakima Health District, drug overdose has become a growing public health concern in Yakima County. In 2021, 98 residents died of a drug overdose, representing a 34% increase from the 73 deaths reported in 2020. Most overdose deaths have involved opioids, specifically fentanyl.
Â
In collaboration with the Yakima Health District, our student supports programs would like to share a social media campaign to help spread awareness of how our community members can access Narcan. Narcan is a free prescription drug that could save someone's life during an overdose. Anyone in Washington State is allowed to administer Narcan. As part of this campaign, YHD has created flyers, videos and social media graphics to share on your pages.Â
Â
If you have questions, contact the YHD or student support director, Emily Nelson, at emily.nelson@esd105.org.Â

Share in the cost of advertising with other districts. Theater ads are shown on all screens in the Yakima Valley before every movie! Â
Â
We have only 1 programming slot remaining for districts to take part in this programming for the 2023 rotation (January 2023-December 2023). With the purchase of each space, participating districts/programs will receive 8 weeks (divided into 4 chunks throughout the year) of advertising specific to their district's needs during the yearlong contract. Each advertisement will run for 11 seconds and be shown on all 20 screens at The Majestic and Yakima Cinema and 3 screens at the Orion Cinema.Â
Â
Each slot will cost districts $1,950. Districts can purchase more than one slot if desired.

Â
If you haven't yet heard, a local company called Common Grounds opened in Yakima this past weekend. What's so special about Common Grounds?Â
Â
Common Grounds was created not only to provide a product, but also to create a place for people of ALL ABILITIES! According to their website 80% of disabled people are unemployed and 60% are suffering from chronic loneliness and mental health issues from social isolation. Their goal is to provide as many jobs for disabled people as they can, while inviting community members to join in free activities like yoga and paint nights alongside disabled community members.Â
Â
As educators, we understand that one of the primary goals of special education programs is to help our disabled students make a smooth transition into the greater community and workforce. Common Grounds is helping to provide a safe place to make that a reality for many. To be invited to these community events, click here to be added to their email list.Â
