Live Streaming and Lots of Fun at the Pond Last Friday
A team of more than 30 students and five faculty and staff members from the School of Communication and Journalism (SoCJ) returned to the pond last Friday, April 29, for one of Stony Brook's favorite traditions – the Roth Pond Regatta. The team broadcast live from the sidelines of the pond, interviewing sailors, naval architects and Stony Brook officials, including President McInnis and Wolfie; offering play-by-play analysis; and streaming the entire event on the School's YouTube, Facebook and Twitter feeds. From behind the scenes in the School's Studio B, students produced the entire show, switching from camera to camera and cueing on-air talent. More than 10,000 people watched the stream.
 
 
A World of Fun and Environmental Education at Earthstock
SBU’s Celebration of Earth Day this year featured more than a week’s worth of fun and education lasting April 12-22. There were lectures and symposiums, wilderness tours and sustainable seafood demonstrations … all culminating in our annual Earthstock Festival, which featured environmental exhibitions, live music and dance, Stony Brook University Police Department (UPD) Spring Fest and the traditional rubber duck races. SBM Drs. Sharon Nachman and Barry Diener Make Front Page News
Last Friday’s (April 29) cover of Newsday featured Dr. Sharon Nachman, Chief of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Stony Brook Medicine (SBM), and Dr. Barry Diener, Pediatric Pulmonologist who works at SBM, providing their expert opinions on the importance of COVID-19 vaccines for children under six years old.
Kudos to Our Budding Journalists!
Maria Lynders, a junior from Connecticut, is the latest SoCJ student to win a Hearst Journalism Award. Maria is one of six students this academic year to be recognized by the competition, which is called the Pulitzer of college journalism, for a profile she wrote for her advanced reporting class. The other winners are Jake Basile and Jeremy Portnoy; and Stephanie Melo, Amaya McDonald and Rabia Gursoy. Congrats to all!
 
Long Week Ahead? End It with Some Pure Entertainment at Staller this Saturday
WHAT: The Doo Wop Project, featuring stars of Broadway’s smash hits Jersey Boys and Motown: The Musical
WHEN: This Saturday, May 7, 8 p.m., Main Stage, Staller Center for the Arts 
WHAT: Traces the evolution of Doo Wop from the classic sound of five guys singing tight harmonies on a street corner to the biggest hits on the radio today – featuring tunes from the Crests, Belmonts and Flamingos; to Smokey Robinson, The Temptations and The Four Seasons; all the way to modern musicians like Michael Jackson, Jason Mraz and Maroon 5.
