   FANDOM INTERNATIONAL
Nothing brings people from different nations together quite like fandoms. That’s the lesson UNT students learned from the first annual Fan Tourism: Behavior and Business study abroad course. Hosted by UNT’s Department of Media Arts, students had the opportunity to travel to England and Scotland, visiting sites made famous by Doctor Who, Harry Potter, Bridgerton and more. Students either chose to study fan behavior or the business side of the fandom tourism industry.
The class will be available again in Summer 2026, after which it will shift to focus on Japan’s tourism industry. Read more about the fan tourism class and how it impacted students.

   MEAN GREEN FLING
The Fall 2025 semester is right around the corner, and that means it’s time for Mean Green Fling! The event is from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, on the Library Mall, South Lawn, North Green and in the University Union. Students can connect with hundreds of student organizations, campus departments and local vendors, and food is available and free with a valid UNT student ID.
Mean Green Fling is a part of First Flight Week, where incoming freshmen and transfer students learn more about campus life. While First Flight Week is for incoming students only, Mean Green Fling is open to all students, new and returning.
First Flight Week is also available for UNT Frisco students and online students.

   MOVE-IN REMINDERS
Here’s a friendly reminder that Move-In Weekend starts at 8 a.m. Friday, Aug. 8. The UNT campus and the city of Denton will be full of first-time students and their families who may be unfamiliar with the area, so here are a few things for Denton drivers and shoppers to keep in mind:
  • Take extra care when driving around Denton this month, especially when driving on or around one-way streets while students get used to Denton traffic patterns.
  • Try to get most shopping done early Friday, Saturday and Sunday mornings this weekend to take advantage of tax-free shopping before new students descend on local retailers.
  • If you’re uncomfortable with driving, all DCTA buses are free to ride with a valid UNT student ID.
We can’t wait to meet our incoming students, but keep in mind that they won’t be familiar with Denton yet. Please be patient while they get settled in and be sure to welcome them to the Mean Green Family!

   FANTASTIC FELLOWS
Three UNT doctoral students earned prestigious national fellowships in science and engineering this year. Jesse Lannette Stenlund and Willow Knight have earned the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship, and Jacob Goralczyk has earned the Department of Defense National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship.
Stenlund is a doctoral student from the College of Science who seeks to improve the quality of organic chemistry education. Knight, from the College of Engineering, focuses on shape memory alloys for cooling applications. Goralczyk, from the College of Engineering, focuses on how stainless steel reacts to corrosives on the atomic scale.
We’re #UNTProud of our fantastic fellows and wish them the best with their fellowships!
