Mason Core Certification Program |
Announcing our Mason Core Faculty Certification Program
COMING SPRING 2025
We are pleased to announce our new Mason Core Faculty Certification program. Developed in conjunction with the Stearns Center, this program offers Mason Core instructors specially designed workshops created with the needs of Mason Core instructors and general education students in mind. With a blend of live workshops (in-person and on Zoom), asynchronous engagement, and individual projects, you can work on your own timeline to earn one of our certifications.
These certifications provide tangible recognition of the time and effort you’ve spent gaining the skills and specialized expertise needed to teach as a part of Mason Core. We'll be in touch with more program details soon, but we hope you'll consider joining us for the first set of workshops for the program, detailed below.
|
First Workshop Cluster - Active & Experiential Learning
|
Join us October 22 & 24 from 10am-12pm on Zoom to learn about the fundamentals of effective teaching, relevant assignments, effective content coverage and efficient grading. Whether this is your first time teaching a Mason Core course or your 25th, this set of workshops provides you with an array of tips, tricks, and techniques every instructor can use to engage non-major students, while successfully navigating the challenges (and appreciate the joys!) of teaching in our general education program.
|
Additional Workshop Opportunities |
Revising a course for Global Contexts category, the new Just Societies flag, or Mason Apex? Considering proposing a new course for Mason Core?
Join us on October 18 from 1pm-3pm on Zoom for a discussion on mapping course assignments to learning outcomes, a guide to the proposal process, and the opportunity to compose a first draft of your proposal and get some early feedback. This workshop is essential for successful proposals!

Is there a workshop you'd like to see us offer? Or would you like us to visit your college or department to discuss Mason Core in general? Do you have lingering questions about teaching or developing Mason Core courses that are not covered in our current offerings?
We are always interested in developing workshops to meet the professional and course development needs of our dedicated Mason Core instructors. We are also happy to visit with units to talk about the structure of Mason Core and the value it brings to our students.

NACE Survey: Calling all faculty! |
Last spring the National Association of Colleges and Employer (NACE), the American Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) and the Society for Experiential Education (SEE) released the report, Faculty Attitudes and Behaviors: The Integration of Career Readiness Into the Curriculum, highlighting data from a joint survey that demonstrate the many ways faculty support career readiness.
To continue that work, please consider completing this short survey to help collect data on how faculty and staff are connecting experiential learning and high-impact learning practices with career preparation for students. If enough faculty complete the survey, George Mason will receive a free report of our campus findings.
Please be sure to add your name and email at the end of the survey if you would like to enter drawings for five (5) prizes of $100 Amazon gift cards. NACE will notify the winners in early January 2025.

300-level Mason Apex Revision Process |
Teaching a newly designated Mason Apex course that's still at the 300-level? As a reminder, existing 300-level Capstone and Synthesis courses should be revised to meet the Mason Apex learning outcomes and submitted to the Mason Core Committee for review ideally by February 20th for the March 6th meeting. This will allow these courses to be renumbered in time for the 2025-2026 catalog. Please refer to this guide for the renumbering process for courses at the 300-level. Attending a course proposal workshop will also help with this process!
|
Revising a course or developing something new for Mason Core consideration? In addition to our proposal workshops, we recommend faculty review our course development and proposal resources available on our website.

What Core Courses Teach Us About Teaching
|
Laura Poms, Mason Core Director, joined the Stearns Center for Teaching and Learning's podcast to talk about impactful teaching strategies that support all students and faculty. In this episode, Laura and Rachel discuss content relevant to instructors who are – and are not – teaching in the undergraduate core curriculum program.
