Researchers at the University of Notre Dame have received a $1.5 million grant from the US National Science Foundation to develop a new artificial intelligence (AI) driven paradigm leveraging social media data to provide insights into personalized interventions for reducing teen and young adult opioid misuse and death.

Valentina Kuskova and Dmitry Zaytsev, faculty of the Lucy Family Institute for Data & Society, contributed to the American Political Science Association (APSA) annual conference with their presentation, “Democracy, State Capacity, Environment: Empirical Insights on Debates.”
More than 7,000 political scientists, scholars, and experts attended the APSA conference, which featured presentations by international and national faculty and researchers with a theme of, “Democracy: Retrenchment, Renovation, & Reimagination.”

Through an agreement with the NIH, researchers at the University of Notre Dame are able to gain access to one of the largest, and most diverse health databases ever.
The database aims to engage people who have been left out of medical research in the past, combining both biological factors and social determinants on a large scale, and making the information easily accessible to any researcher with a secure internet connection.

| Democracy Catalyst Grants Available
|
The Democracy Initiative seeks to support new research, formation, and convening projects on campus that further the study and strengthening of democracy.
The Democracy Catalyst Fund is explicitly aimed at catalyzing new areas of inquiry or programming.

Examples of the types of projects funded include:

- Data gathering and fieldwork (all levels of scholarship)
- Research assistants (both graduate and undergraduate)
- Surveys and experiments
- Course development (limited to $5,000)
- Workshops
- Conferences
- Speaker honoraria
