Attacks against UC retirees: Staying safe in a digital world

(Association of Retirement Organizations
in Higher Education) |
We all know that retirement is rarely a moment of disengagement. For many, it marks a transition into a new phase of meaningful intellectual, creative, and civic life. Retired and emeritus faculty at UC Berkeley remain deeply connected to their institutions through mentoring, research, teaching, and service, and many report high levels of satisfaction and purpose. And yet, as academic leaders, we don’t often create space for positive, forward-looking conversations that help faculty envision this transition—or consider how institutions might benefit from it.
The Charting The Journey to a Fulfilling Retirement webinar series offers a valuable opportunity to do just that. This national series frames retirement as a period of reinvention rather than withdrawal, and introduces fresh perspectives on purpose, identity, health, cognitive vitality, and engagement beyond full-time academic work. Instead of focusing narrowly on logistics or financial planning, it encourages faculty to think more broadly about what comes next—and invites institutions to think more intentionally about later-career pathways.
