Important Message on Safety and Security

Dear Duke Class of 2023 Parent,
We are excited to welcome you and your student to Duke. While you may feel both excited and anxious, we want to share some information that may help put your mind at ease.

The safety of students involves many people working together: parents, students, the campus police, Student Affairs, Office of Institutional Equity, Transportation, faculty and staff, etc.  We all have a role.

Duke has a low level of crime and serious crime is rare.  Theft of unattended items is the most common crime on campus.

Read more about safety resources available from Vice President of Administration Kyle Cavanaugh, and Chief of Police John Dailey, on important safety information and reminders.
Kyle Cavanaugh is Vice President of Administration at Duke University and also serves as the university's Emergency Coordinator. In 2010, he assumed leadership for Disability Management and Duke Police.  John Dailey is the Chief of Police for Duke University and Duke University Hospital. He oversees law enforcement and security measures for Duke's academic campus and health system, as well as off-campus areas.

The First-Year Transition: Building Community

Building Community Video
This month's video encourages family members to prepare for their student's social adjustment to college. Making friends in a new setting can be uncomfortable and takes time for all students, despite how outgoing a student is or how many friends they have back home. Several students reflect on their experiences about how they navigated this first-year challenge. Click above to watch the video.
DukeReach
If you ever have behavioral, mental, or physical health concerns about your student during their undergraduate years on campus, DukeReach is available to help. They support students, faculty, staff, parents, and others - connecting individuals to resources to best support our students.

Duke Student Medical Insurance Plan

The 2019-2020 open enrollment for the Duke Student Medical Insurance Plan (SMIP) began Saturday, June 15. Every student must enroll in or waive the SMIP coverage by September 17, 2019.
Students received an email on June 15 with more information including instructions on enrolling or waiving the coverage. The Duke SMIP is administered by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina. Visit this website for plan details. To waive coverage, the student must be insured by an approved health insurance plan
To make the best decision for your family, please call your insurance company and ask if you have access to health care services at Duke Health locations, and what (if any) co-payments, co-insurances, and deductibles will be your responsibility.
Visit the Student Health website for more information.

LiveSafe App

Duke LiveSafe is a mobile app available for free through the Apple App Store and Android App Store that offers real-time, two-way communication between Duke community members and the Duke University Police Department. We encourage all students to download the app!
Some features of the app include:
  • Quick call access to 911 and Duke Police as well as the ability to send a text message to Duke police.
  • Ability to submit tips by text, photo, video, and audio anonymously.
  • A popular “SafeWalk” feature, which allows Duke community members to be virtually accompanied to a destination using GPS-enabled location technology.
  • Contacts for safety and security resources at Duke and in Durham.

Duke Student Email Accounts

Students must begin checking their Duke email accounts regularly. They will continue receiving emails throughout the summer with helpful reminders, details about deadlines, and necessary tasks to complete before arriving to Duke.

If students encounter any difficulty accessing their email, students should contact the Office of Information Technology (OIT).
