Happy New Year!
Happy New Year!
"Behind the window to the right of the main door is a little boy named Magnus looking out the window. He looks out with a mix of awe and fear....

Fortunately his Mom, Eva, is sitting behind him by the fire knitting a sweater. All is well and it is the night before Christmas Eve....."
Happy Holidays, dear Digesters, from
the Henry Miller Library!
We know it's a busy time, so we'll be brief.
We just wanted to thank you for your support during the past year.
$2 a month may not seem like a lot, but it's extremely helpful to this little book store in the woods and we look forward to
seeing you in 2017!!
(And don't forget to raise a birthday toast to Henry on December 26th!!!)
Speaking of the holidays and birthday toasts, behold the video below...
Over a plate of food and glass of wine, the 87 year old Buddha of Brooklyn enthusiastically riffs on his heroes. Indeed, it's the closest we'll get to a Christmas dinner* with Henry in this dimension...
Presenting the commemorative Aller Retour Paris (first edition) poster by Edwin Fotheringham!
In 2014 the Library curated Aller Retour Paris, a week's worth of events celebrating Henry's time in his adopted home of Paris. And now there's a poster celebrating it.
Click here to order and enter the word "Digest" when you check out.
We'll issue you a $5 digest discount!!
Exclusive photos from the Aller Retour Paris dinner party!
The Aller Retour Paris festival included a dinner party celebrating the 80th anniversary of the publication of the Tropic of Cancer. We corralled a who's who of Miller colleagues, experts, and fans for an amazing evening of discussions and sausages. Click here for photos!
From the December 12th issue of the New Yorker: Banned Books and Blockbusters
Speaking of Tropic of Cancer, here's a fascinating read on how the book shaped society's view of free speech. "Depending on your point of view," Louis Menand opines, "it either lowered the drawbridge or opened the floodgates." (We say: why not both?)
Blast from the Past! West Coast Poetry Slam Finals and Ferlinghetti at the Library!
You know those "Christmas in July" things to make you forget about winter? This is like that. Kinda. It's an account of the July 2004 West Cost Poetry Slam finals,
courtesy of the Beat Museum on Wheels.
And yes, that's Magnus performing on the left and Lawrence Ferlinghetti, chilling, on the right!
Vintage video of "nothing happening" at the HML, circa 2009!
We admit this isn't the most electrifing video in the world, but we think that's the point.
The video was shot by a someone speaking Dutch (?) Nothing is happening except
for a cameo from the legendary Eric Perley (!!)
For those of you reading this a particularly wintry climate, perhaps it'll provide a little escapism!
Still searching for that last-minute Christmas gift for the kid who has everything?
May we suggest the Big Sur Dark Tone Nightstand... "Capturing a quiet simplicity that will grow with your child, this nightstand is sweetly accented with layered wood details, arrow feet, and three roomy drawers...."
Next to the last note: Spreading the word, listen to this:
Best of The Soul of California

See: Henry Miller's Big Sur

And with that, we wish you an abundance of health, happiness, and perhaps even a new nightstand in the new year....
* "Awkward family Christmas dinners have long been a seasonal tradition. Henry Miller has enjoyed his share, as is attested to in the on-line essay Choking on My Own Saliva: Henry Miller's Bourgeois Family Christmas in 'Nexus.' "- Family Systems Psychotherapy and Literature/Literary Criticism by James Decker (Style, Summer 1997)
