Each year, we have the honor of recognizing one individual from throughout the 25 public school districts that we serve in the south central region of Washington State to represent us as our Regional Classified Employee of the Year. This June, we announced our 2022 recipient of this award, Mrs. Jill Hendricks. Mrs. Hendricks serves the West Valley School District community as their parent engagement liaison. Through her work, she led the implementation of Ram Landing, a place for those experiencing hardship to get the support they need to succeed. Mrs. Hendricks continues to engage her community through the ongoing management of this program.

We are excited to share that ESD 105 was selected as one of 9 statewide organizations to receive the College Spark Washington LEADER Initiative grant. This means that our special programs and teaching and learning teams will receive additional funding to collaborate on creating new, unique ways of increasing and sustaining educators that reflect the communities they serve!

It's no surprise that strong Tier 1 literacy instruction is essential to the success of students in our reading blocks and ELA classrooms. It is well known that students who can read and write fluently and who boast a robust vocabulary are also more likely to be successful in other subject areas because these skills are the foundation of our day-to-day classroom routines.
A common misconception is that literacy instruction itself, is the responsibility of our general education elementary teachers and our secondary ELA teachers, when in fact, literacy is a subject that not only supports all subject areas, but should also be taught throughout the course of every day, in every subject area.

- In 2020, the U.S. had one death by suicide every 11 minutes.
- For people ages 10–34, suicide is a leading cause of death.
- From April 2020 through April 2021, over 100,000 people died from drug overdoses.
Behind each of these data points, there are people, families and communities who have been impacted. Yet, in the face of these urgent realities, there is hope!
On July 16, 2022, the three-digit dialing code 988 was implemented for anyone living in the United States. This multilingual code allows people to call, text or chat (English only) by connecting people to the existing National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, where compassionate, accessible care and support are available for anyone experiencing mental health–related distress. The chat feature will be available through the Lifeline’s website. People can use 988 if they are having thoughts of suicide, mental health or substance use crises, or any other kind of emotional distress. People can also dial 988 if they are worried about a loved one who may need crisis support.
Earlier this month we posted this same information on our ESD105 social media feeds. We ask that you like and share these posts to help spread this information far and wide. Let's help keep our colleagues, neighbors, students, family and friends safe and supported! @ESD105

It's no secret that a student's ability to read impacts how they perform across all subject areas. We also know that teaching reading, spelling, and writing is complex! Paraprofessionals are invited to join us as we unpack the SoR and develop foundational knowledge, of the reading brain, the simple view of reading, Scarborough's reading rope, the six components of literacy development (oral language, phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension), and strategies to benefit all students.

A Bright (Yellow) Start To Each Day
|
A bright yellow school bus with a smiling bus driver is often the first and last interaction a student has when they're going to and from school. Our ESD 105 transportation department is proud to help students that need transportation between school districts and for those who are attending our early learning centers!
