ADVANCEMENT NEWS

Our Sustaining Fund is Launched and Ready to Support Kids and Teachers!

On September 26th, at our annual Parent Open House, Head of School Jim Leonard launched our Sustaining Fund and asked our 37 Sustaining Fund Ambassador Parent Volunteers, who will help with fundraising, to raise their hands. Our Sustaining Fund is named such because it sustains and nurtures our school. It takes the education at Santa Fe Prep from good to great while opening the doors for bright and motivated kids with financial need to have access to this life-changing experience. If you’re a parent, click here to see who the Ambassadors are for your grade and please thank them for their time and dedication when they contact you.

IN THE ARTS
Trend Magazine's fall cover piece features the work of Prep Art Teacher and Cordova-Based Artist Paula Castillo. "the boat" (2015, aluminum with patina) is a relief sculpture that graces the front hall of a custom home design in the foothills of Santa Fe that took more than five years to build.
"I wanted to call it "the boat" because that's kind of the metaphor I use for the house. I was thinking about displacement and how beautiful that is." -Paula Castillo
FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Interacting With The Authorities Forum

On Wednesday we had an upper-school forum focused on how our students might interact with the authorities (police) that was hugely successful. The panelists were two state policemen and criminal defense attorney (and former Prep parent) John Day. Student questions were gathered beforehand in upper school advisory, and the panelists responded to these—not always in full agreement. Given recent events nationwide and tragic outcomes from some citizen/police interactions, we thought it wise to discuss students’ rights, as well as how best to conduct themselves in various situations (traffic stops, house parties, etc.) I imagine this is a forum we’ll hold every couple of years moving forward.

Drop-Off / Pick-Up

Now that we've settled into the rhythms of school, I want to remind parents of a few key aspects of drop-off and pick-up.

1.) Please do not drop off your student in the IHM parking lotand do not access the Mt. Carmel Road as a "short-cut" into the Prep parking lot. We have a delicate relationship with the Carmelite Sisters, and this includes only student parking in the lot we lease across the street.

2.) Thanks to all of you arriving from the East who let a couple of left-turning cars from the other direction on Camino Cruz Blanca turn into our lot.

3.) Dropping your child off at 7:45 am will be a daily breeze, from either direction, as there is virtually no traffic. By 7:55 am, it's another story completely, as you have no doubt learned.

4.) If you are looking to turn East on Cruz Blanca after morning drop-off, please use the exit-only gate at the east end of our faculty parking lot. The main drive is for right turns only in the morning.

5.) During afternoon pick-up, pull into the circle and, if you can find a spot on the outside of the circle, take it. Please do not leave your car unattended. And picking your child up at 3:45 pm or later, if possible, lightens the load. Remember that our library is open until 5:00 pm each day, and it's a lovely place for students to get some schoolwork done.

Most importantly, thanks for yielding to students crossing in the morning from the IHM lot! As mornings grow darker and roads become slick on occasion when the snow falls, safety remains our highest priority.

Appreciate it.

- Jim

Survival Tips for Extroverts and Introverts

In the last few years introversion and extroversion have been used to describe temperaments. We sometimes confuse these temperaments with personality traits and believe a student with a shy personality is introverted and a student with an outgoing personality is extroverted. This isn’t necessarily true.
The primary difference between an extroverted and an introverted temperament has to do with how people “recharge” (at home alone or going to a party) and where they are most comfortable (in noisy, active settings or quieter, calmer settings). Introverts may enjoy social time, but they recharge by having some time alone in a quiet environment. Extroverts may enjoy alone time, but are energized by time with others and may be not be negatively affected by noisy environments.
At home and school, parents and teachers can provide opportunities for students with both temperaments:
- Encourage your extrovert to learn to spend quiet time alone through gradual exposure. An extrovert can learn to enjoy their own company.
- Expose your introvert to a  more active environment through gradual exposure and also allow him to recharge in her quiet haven.
- Recognize that every family member may have different temperaments and therefore different needs.
- Communicate with teachersif your child takes time to be alone at lunch or during break, let teachers know this is how they recharge and find comfort. Some students at Prep take time to read before they eat lunch.  They need to recharge before they enter into the social world.
- Keep in mind, whether extroverted or introverted, students need to advocate for themselves while at the same time learning new skills. Recognizing personal needs and limits may come easier for some students, but love and acceptance, positive role modeling, and practice can help yourchildren  learn the skills they need to adapt to the world around them.
