"My College Experience"

Soddy Daisy High School Faculty & Staff share some thoughts on their own college experiences.

Jill Sobon

  • College/University: University of West Florida
  • Why did you attend this school: It is a beautiful area in Pensacola, FL and I thought it would give me a different perspective than south Florida which was where I spent most of my childhood
  • Degree/Major: Bachelors in Psychology
  • Minor: Child Welfare
  • Graduate Schools/Degrees: Masters of Science in Child Development, Virginia Tech & Masters of Education in Education Leadership, George Mason University
  • Extracurricular Activities: Campus Activity Board, Inter varsity Christian Fellowship
Favorite college memories: time with friends, preschool children I worked with on campus
  • Favorite class/professor and why: did not have a favorite professor. I valued each professor for the different learning and perspectives they provided me with to guide my future teaching career
  • What do you know now that you wish you had known then: Utilize as many of the campus resources that are available to you - it is all free with your tuition and fees
  • Best piece of advice for our current SDHS seniors: Treasure your time in college with learning and friends as it can be a very special time in your life.

Karyn Cox

  • College/University: Liberty University
  • Why did you attend this school: It was a Christian college so I visited for a weekend and LOVED it. The atmosphere, people and professors were amazing. That's what made me decide for sure.
  • Degree/Major: BS in English
  • Minor: Bible
  • Graduate Schools/Degrees: University of West Alabama--MS Library Media; UTC--Administration
  • Extracurricular Activities: I worked in the Academic Advising and Career Placement Office all through college because I had to pay my way in addition to my scholarship
  • Favorite college memories: Football and Basketball games, midnight movies, all night study sessions w/ friends, and dating lots of different guys to learn what I liked and didn't like
  • Favorite class/professor and why: Dr. Travers; he was my advisor and taught several of my English classes; he was smart, kind, and cool all at the same time.
  • What do you know now that you wish you had known then: You have time. Everything doesn't have to be rushed. I graduated in 3 years by going to classes during every break, I got married while still in school, and I started teaching less than 3 months after turning 21.
  • Best piece of advice for our current SDHS seniors: Two things: 1. Get to know yourself during high school. Figure out what you're good at and what you like so you can make a decision about what you really want to do with your life and how you can be happy and successful at the same time. 2. Learn to prioritize during high school. Figure out what's important and how to divide your time and attention to reach your goals.

Making Out-Of-State Schools More Affordable

As if college isn't expensive enough as it is... attending an out-of-state school can be even more expensive. However, there are many options for attending college outside of Tennessee and not having to pay out-of-state tuition. Both Georgia and North Carolina have programs in place where some of their state colleges/universities waive the out-of-state fees for Tennessee residents. The Southern Regional Education Board also provides information on many schools around the south that offer in-state tuition for Tennessee residents based on their chosen major. Use the buttons below to find more information about these options.
