It's well known that high doses of X-rays and other types of high-energy electromagnetic radiation are carcinogens (cancer-causing agents). But, is there a connection between exposure to low levels of radiation – such as those used in dental X-rays and mammograms – and increased cancer risk?

Precancerous conditions are often identified through routine screenings such as blood tests that are part of a standard physical exam. Other times, they’re found when an individual has a specific symptom or health issue. Physicians may prescribe treatments to prevent the cancer or recommend monitoring the condition for signs that it is progressing toward cancer.
