Middle States Accreditation Steering Committee

To Our Stony Brook Community:

Earlier this year, we launched our Middle States Accreditation Reaffirmation process. This university-wide accreditation is an important federal requirement for financial aid such as Pell grants and research funding from federal agencies. Moreover, the reaffirmation process is an opportunity to review how effective we are at educating and supporting our students.

Our Middle States Reaffirmation team, composed of approximately 100 faculty, staff, students and key community stakeholders, has produced and submitted our self-study design, a 30-page document outlining the organization and processes we will undertake to demonstrate our compliance with seven Middle States standards:

Standard I - Mission and Goals
Standard II - Ethics and Integrity
Standard III - Design and Delivery of the Student Learning Experience
Standard IV - Support of the Student Experience
Standard V - Educational Effectiveness Assessment
Standard VI - Planning, Resources, and Institutional Improvement
Standard VII - Governance, Leadership, and Administration

On April 27, Middle States Vice President Liaison Paul Starkey conducted a series of online meetings with executive leadership, Stony Brook’s Middle States Accreditation Steering Committee, and other stakeholders across the University. Dr. Starkey favorably reviewed the design document and offered helpful feedback, which was integrated into the final copy.

Over the next several months, the Reaffirmation team will begin the intensive process of identifying and cataloging evidence of compliance with Middle States standards, which will form the basis of the full self-study report due in fall 2023.

For more information, including the self-study design, please visit our Middle States Accreditation Reaffirmation website. We look forward to providing you with future updates on progress and opportunities for community feedback.
