Leading the way
TU proudly announces the formation of the Black Alumni Leadership Council. Chaired by Dessie B. Nash (BBA ’94), a managing director and market investment executive at Bank of America Private Bank for the metro New York market, council members will be instrumental in helping the university further the diversity, equity and inclusion objectives included in its new strategic plan. Black students at TU now “have individuals who look like them and who serve in the industries they may want to work in and can open doors for them,” Nash said.

Dazzling Black light
Justin Brown (BFA ’09) runs a thriving design firm in Houston. As part of this year’s Black History Month campaign, Nickelodeon commissioned him to use his graphic design skills and artistic talent to bring awareness to the lives and accomplishments of Black people. The result is Shine a Light, which sets in motion Brown’s belief that Black History Month raises “public awareness that Black people are a group to be considered and their impact needs to be recognized. Bringing their stories to light makes these impacts seem real for generations of people.”

Time for a legal detox
“I cannot envision a better way to start my environmental law career,” said TU College of Law student Jorge Roman-Romero. In August, Roman-Romero will head north to Wisconsin to take up an Equal Justice Works fellowship with Midwest Environmental Advocates (MEA). Through regulatory advocacy, direct representation and public awareness campaigns, Julian will advocate for disadvantaged communities that face disproportionate exposure to toxic pollutants from contaminated water. “I am confident this fellowship will further develop my environmental law expertise, hone my advocacy skills and, most importantly, make me grow as a person.”
