Beginners Hula Nashville - Indigenous Voices
Join us at Green Door Gourmet for a full day learning the history, culture, beauty, and grace of the Hula with guest Kumu Stephanie Ku'pulei Mahelona, affectionately known as Auntie Stephi. This event is part of the Global Education Center's Indigenous Voices project, made possible with support from a Sharp grant from Humanities Tennessee, an independent affiliate of National Endowment for the Humanities. Black Dance Festival - April 28 - May 1, 2022
Now THIS is a four-day festival not to be missed!!! This is your opportunity to explore many different dance forms that hail from the vast Afro Latin Diaspora, from Mother Africa to the Caribbean to South America to the USA. We have some amazing guest artists and some beloved local artists offering workshops in African, Afrobeats, Brazilian, Caribbean, Colombian, Cuban, Haitian, Puerto Rican Bomba, as well as African American dances lLindy Hop, Memphis Jookin, and so much more! We have socials each night: Vogue: From Harlem to House workshop and house party; one of our signature Afro Latin World Dance Parties (like speed-dating but speed-dancing - mini try-it-out classes); Old School Night (think line dances, Chicago Style Stepping, Detroit Hustle, Soul Train Line); and Saturday at the Savoy, a fun night with the Harlem Swing Dance Society. The Neutral Ground Film Screening
Friday, April 22 - 7:00 pm - In-person screening at Global Education Center April 3 - 6, 2022 - Virtual screenings Director: CJ Hunt will lead post-film dialogue
The Neutral Ground documents New Orleans’ fight over monuments and America’s troubled romance with the Lost Cause. In 2015, director CJ Hunt was filming the New Orleans City Council’s vote to remove four confederate monuments. But when that removal is halted by death threats, CJ sets out to understand why a losing army from 1865 still holds so much power in America. This film is screened through a Fisk University/Global Education Center partnership and is part of Southern Circuit Tour of Independent FIlmmakers, a program of South Arts with support from National Endowment for the Arts.

Lily Toppes the World Film Screening

Lily Topples the World follows 20-year-old sensation Lily Hevesh – the world’s most acclaimed domino toppler and the only girl in her field – as she rises as an artist, role model, and young woman. Filmed for over three years across countless cities and featuring appearances by Jimmy Fallon, Katy Perry, Will Smith, YouTuber Casey Neistat, and a steady stream of Gen-Z creators, Lily Topples the World is a coming-of-age story cloaked within a unique portrait of an artist, a story of how passion and artistry can make dreams come true, and an unlikely American tale of a quiet Chinese adoptee who transforms into a global artistic force with over 1 billion YouTube views. We are excited to finally welcome Flamenco Louisville for their four-day residency, delayed repeatedly thanks to our old friend COVID. This talented crew will finally join us on May 13 through May 16, 2022.
