Matthew 11:28-30

28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Yesterday was good Monday! In the tradition of Peter and the disciples I go fishing after Easter every year. We have caught fish in great numbers! When i join my friend at Lake Tana in Burleson County, my pulse slows. It was a delightful and restful day.

Have we made an idol of exhaustion? Where do we go when we are tired? Most weeks I can't go to another location. The good news is Jesus' invitation still stands. "Come to me. . ." Jesus does not lead us into inactivity for its own sake. We take his yoke and learn of him. We join ourselves to Jesus and become his apprentices. Dallas Willard was right: grace is not opposed to effort but to earning.

What do we learn in the school of Christ? Christ. He is our curriculum. Jesus is gentle and humble in heart. His yoke is easy and his burden is light. He alone offers soul rest. Rest is not finally about relaxation but about right relationship with God. Jesus will teach us if we are ready to learn.

Pray with me:
Yes, Lord we find our rest in you. You are our hope. In you alone we find our refuge, our fortress of strength, our mighty Rock! Our salvation and honor depend on you. We trust in you at all times, and pour out our hearts to you because you are our refuge.
In Jesus we rest and pray, Amen.
