Now that the year is in full swing, we will be sending this newsletter about once per month. In it, you can expect to find information designed to help you support your student, including important dates and details about events happening around campus.
Fall is beautiful on campus and the colors seem particularly vibrant this year. Poet Robert Frost could've easily been talking about fall when he wrote that Miami is "the most beautiful campus that ever there was." The changing colors are also a reminder of how quickly we are approaching the end of the fall semester. Remind your student to strike a good balance between school work and enjoying the second half of the semester with their community.
If they are struggling and not sure where to look for help, you can use the Parent and Family Programs' Resources website as a starting point. Here, we organize resources from around campus by topic so it is easy to find what you need.
Love and Honor,
Joe Hawkins

Student Support and Safety Related to Violence in the Middle East
|
The past two weeks have been challenging and scary for many students on our campus following the terrorist attacks launched by Hamas in Israel and the violence and loss of life that has followed in the region. Both our Jewish students and our Middle Eastern students have told us they feel unsettled and scared, and we know that many of you as parents worry about your student’s safety. Student safety is always our top priority, and both our staff and MUPD have been present at many campus events over the past two weeks to help ensure that our students feel safe and supported. We have been in regular contact with our student organizations and the leadership of Hillel and Chabad and have been supporting them as well. We sent a message to the Miami community last week and followed up with an additional message in our weekly email to students on October 12. Students have been vocal and engaged on campus, while still demonstrating the Code of Love and Honor by being respectful of each other, even when they have differing views and perspectives. As this situation continues to develop, our police will continue to connect with state and federal agencies to scan for potential threats to our community, and our staff will continue to be present and support our students however we can.

Libraries + Parents: Partnering for Your Student's Academic Growth
College can be challenging for students, but as parents and family members you can provide critical support by connecting them with valuable resources like Miami University Libraries. You'll learn about innovative programs like the Personal Librarian service that provides tailored, one-on-one support.
Academic Advising and Registration
With registration for spring classes right around the corner, your student will likely be talking about this process. Listen to Dr. Amy Bergerson, Associate Provost and Dean for Undergraduate Education, and members of Miami's academic advising team as they discuss the advising and registration process as well as provide insight into coaching and supporting your students.
