Bridgeport City News | Bill Finch, Mayor
July 25, 2014

On Friday, July 18, Governor Dannel P. Malloy held a bill signing ceremony to commemorate passage of PA 14-133, Access to Birth Certificates adn Parental Health Information for Adopted Persons.
On Friday, July 18, Mayor Bill Finch participated in a bill signing ceremony held by Governor Dannel P. Malloy to commemorate the passage of PA-14-133, Access to Birth Certificates and Parental Health Information for Adopted Persons. In response, to the signing of this legislation, Mayor Finch, an adoptee and longtime leader on adoption rights authored an Op-Ed for CT News Junkie.
I’m a proud father of four kids. So when the doctor asks for our family medical history, why does the government keep that information locked away? I may be the mayor of our state’s largest city, but because of outdated laws, I’m just another adoptee who is treated as a second-class citizen.
I’m one of hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of Americans who are prohibited by law from possessing their own birth records-the basic information that tells them who they are and where they came from.
More than 65,000 adoptees in Connecticut have been legally barred from accessing their birth records.
Bridgeport officer hailed for saving toddler” – WTNH
A police officer Tuesday evening helped save the life of a child.
Officer Michael Novia was on patrol in the area of Park Avenue when a woman flagged him down and hysterically stated that her child was not breathing. Novia observed an unresponsive child in the back seat of the vehicle. He radioed dispatchers who alerted medical staff at Saint Vincent’s Medical Center of an incoming patient.
He then activated his light and sirens, told the family to follow him and escorted the family to the hospital.
Medical personnel at Saint Vincent’s Medical Center informed police that the child, who is 18-months-old, probably would not have survived if Novia had waited for an ambulance at the scene.
He was transferred to Yale-New Haven Hospital, where he was reported in good condition.
“We called the hospital this morning and I am so happy to report Dylan is in good condition,” Mayor Bill Finch said. “I have four sons and I can’t imagine being in that situation. I want to thank Officer Novia and all of our police officers. The reality is that were it not for that actions of this officer, a family could be mourning the death of a child. Instead, we have hope and good news from doctors.”
“The quick actions of Officer Novia saved a life yesterday of a young boy, and I am grateful,” Assistant Police Chief James Nardozzi said. “It is important to recognize  that our officers do outstanding work every day keeping our community safe. It usually happens outside of the spotlight. Today we honor Officer Novia, but I also want to recognize all of our officers who do their jobs exceptionally well day in and day out. They have my thanks.”

"Bridgeport Announces Gun Buyback"- CBS Connecticut

Mayor Bill Finch and Assistant Police Chief James Nardozzi announce the City of Bridgeport's Gun Buyback program during a press conference held on Tuesday in the Mayor's Conference Room.
Mayor Bill Finch and the Police Department announced on Tuesday that the city’s successful Gun Buyback program will resume on Saturday.
To date, people have turned in more than 900 guns. Through private donations, the city has given out nearly $100,000 in cash and gift cards.
The Gun Buyback event will be held on Saturday, July 26, 2014, at 30 Florence St. from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The location is home to Healing Tree, a non-profit organization that provides support services to residents in the city’s East End and East Side neighborhoods.
“Taking action against gun violence in our city is one of my top priorities,” said Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch. “Guns that are purchased as part of this program can never be used to hurt or kill ever again. I strongly believe that this effort has saved lives and has made Bridgeport a safer place for kids and families. Even if this program saves only one life, it is money well spent.”
As part of the program, the Bridgeport Police Department will offer up to $200 for a working handgun. People turning in rifles will receive up to $100. A weapon determined to be an assault rifle will be eligible for up to $400.
