Alumni Spotlight

Olivia Trice traveled to Senegal last summer where she lived with a host family and had an opportunity to experience Senegalese culture. She was so moved by her time in Africa that when she came home, she decided to use her Making Global Local project to give back to her host community; you can check out her fundraising efforts here

What was your favorite part of your DCPS Study Abroad experience?  My favorite part about my DCPS Study Abroad experience was my home stay. For a week I got to live in the Senegalese village of Palmarin with a host family. There, I got to learn more in depth about every day life as a villager, worker, and a student. It taught me how to live a very minimalist life, down to the very bare essentials.
How has this trip impacted your life back in DC? Traveling abroad has changed my perspective tremendously. Living in a city, where everything is accessible and fast paced can make you feel dependent. When I was in Senegal, thousands of miles away from home, my eyes were opened to the entire world. I am no longer see the necessity of the gaudy fixtures that come with America. I don't feel confined to the microcosm of my city. After studying abroad, I'm always dreaming of far away.
Can you tell us about your fundraising project?  While I was [in Senegal], my service learning project included teaching a French-English class to students around my age at a school, Academie de Fatick. Approximately 900 Students from across the surrounding villages commute and attend this school
At the school, I got to spend time with the students and meet with the administrators. They showed me a small storage room that contained the entire population of books for the school. Many of the schools I've gone to have had entire built-in libraries, the students of Academie de Fatick deserve the resources they need to succeed. Although they posses a collection of books, the supply is not nearly enough to suffice the school's population.
My privilege as an American student can serve this global issue. I've presented to my school district and have so far solicited a few donors. At an $81 out of $4,000 goal, I have many more people to impact before the school can too have enough copies of textbooks for each student to use.
