Upcoming Art of Community, Moth collaboration and more!
Hello, New Subscribers!
We hope you'll enjoy this monthly update on all things Upstream Arts. We only include highlights here, so be sure to keep tabs on our website to learn more about our arts programming for people with disabilities at every stage of life, plus public events and opportunities.

Upstream Arts Teaching Artists Fall Training
Every September before our fall programs launch, Upstream Arts holds several days of training for our Teaching Artists. An opportunity to workshop curriculum, practice ASL, and dig deeper into professional development, these trainings are also a chance for all of our Teaching Artists to connect with each other and our work before jumping into the fall schedule, full steam ahead.

Moth Collaboration in February 2018
Upstream Arts is thrilled to announce our collaboration with The Moth, a non-profit dedicated to the art and craft of stroytelling. Best known for their national podcast, The Moth also holds workshops and monthly story slams throughout the country. We will be partnering with The Moth to bring a storytelling workshop to our community in early 2018.

Dear Friend,
We're acknowledging and expanding the ways our work in and with our community can help all of us redefine old narratives around ability and disability. We are therefore committing to "The Year of Our Story." In addition to several trainings open to the community at large this fall, we're looking forward to an exciting storytelling collaboration in the winter. In this issue of The Current, you'll find -
  • Information on The Art of Community, our trainings with Midwest Special Services on Person Centered Planning and Informed Choice,
  • Tidbits from our Fall Training for Teaching Artists,
  • Gratitude and a fall funding goal,
  • Heads up for a storytelling workshop with The Moth, and
  • Our upcoming programs in Milwaukee.
With abundant thanks for all that you do!

The Art of Community: Person Centered Planning and Informed Choice Trainings with Midwest Special Services
The Art of Community has begun! Last week we held our first training addressing Person Centered Planning and Informed Choice, an approach which aims to inform individuals with disabilities of all their options for living and working and to honor their choices.
Mark your calendars: the next training will be October 16 at Surly Brewing Company from 6-8pm. In partnership with MSS, we'll be holding three more trainings for individuals with disabilities and their family, friends, disability support staff and employers as we move towards more inclusive communities. Using the creative arts, these trainings will provide basic information and familiarity with Person Centered Planning and Informed Choice, which are central to many of the changes brought about by the Olmstead Act.
Upcoming Programs in Milwaukee
In mid-October we are excited to return Milwaukee for a residency at the Harry and Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center as well as a few visits to our friends in the Milwaukee Public School system and at Portal Inc. While at the JCC, we're looking forward to working with both the Sunday STARS youth program and the Chaverim program for adults over the course of nearly two weeks and to continuing our relationship when we visit again in February and April.
