When things are bad, do you ever speak up for God? When you are supposed to say something, you know it. The amygdala in our brain sends the fight or flight hormones and sometimes we just freeze. Later we say, “I wish I had said something.”
John saw a mighty angel who was straddling the earth holding a little scroll. Like a marble in the hand of Shaquille O’Neal, the scroll seemed small in the hands of the angel. God told John to get the scroll, take it and eat it. It tasted good but soured in his stomach. Then God told him to preach to many peoples, nations and languages.
Someday, you may be called upon to speak up for God. John’s word-picture reminds us of two things. First, if we are going to speak for God, we should be sure what we are saying comes from him. God’s Word is good but it does not always make us comfortable. Still, every time I speak, the only power to change lives comes from God who speaks through his word. So take the word of God, the scriptures and feast on them. Take them deep into your soul to fill the reservoir from which your mouth will speak. Second, speak up for God. The world needs to hear what God is saying. In the end, Jesus, the First Word, will have the Last Word. Don’t be afraid to tell the world of God’s love.
