A Message from Eric Skaar
Colleagues and friends of the Division,
When we started MyMP, I made a decision that I would not advertise funding successes as part of these newsletters. Grants and funding are certainly essential to what we do, but their purpose is to help us achieve our primary goals of making discoveries and training scientists. Therefore it is the discoveries and the training successes that we celebrate in MyMP. I am making an exception to this policy in this month’s newsletter to update you on the Division’s funding successes, because they have been remarkable. In the fiscal year 2019, our total grants expenditures reached $15,877,276. This is a 41.02% increase from the fiscal year 2018, and a 55.68% increase since the fiscal year 2017. This impressive increase in funding is a clear representation of the outstanding research programs of our established faculty, the successes of our recently recruited junior faculty, and the consistently excellent support provided by our grants management team. On behalf of all scientists in the Division, I would like to thank Karin, Alethea, Leigh, and Lauren for providing such incredible support. I look forward to seeing the impressive discoveries and positive training outcomes that result from these funds.

Scipreneur Challenge 2020In a “Shark Tank”-like competition setting, the Scipreneur Challenge (formerly the Tech Venture Challenge) from Life Science Tennessee's Academic Alliance offers university students and postdoctoral fellows hands-on experiences in the commercialization of research and entrepreneurship. Participants in Scipreneur are assigned to 4- to 6- person teams and granted real-life intellectual property (IP) generated at area research institutions (from the Vanderbilt CTTC). The teams are tasked with designing a commercialization plan for the technology, including a business proforma (executive summary) and a 10-minute investor pitch. The participating teams, comprising of research scientists, engineers, business students, clinicians, and mentors will present a business plan and compete to win prizes in a final pitch competition, judged by the area business community and investors. Winners receive prize money raised through program sponsorship.
The final pitch will be held in late May but there is a general interest meeting in MRB III Room 1220 on March 19th at 5:30 pm. Students and post-docs from all backgrounds are welcome!
