Teaching Tips

This week’s teaching tips addresses a hot topic in higher education: blended teaching. UTLC:TIO’s Amy Brown and ITS:Learning Technology’s Evan Kelly recently presented “Strategies and Spaces: Blended Learning for UNCG” and the recording is now available!
  • Defining Blended Teaching. Blended teaching (also referred to as hybrid teaching), is a broad term used to describe instruction that combines delivery formats (face-to-face vs. web-based) and/or delivery synchronicity (synchronous vs. asynchronous). Specific models of blended or hybrid teaching include hyflex instruction, the flipped classroom, and lab rotations - just to name a few. Regardless of the chosen model, all blended teaching must be designed with a high level of attention to the learning objectives and intentionality to meet the needs of all learners without over burdening the instructor(s).
  • Blended Teaching Considerations. The pandemic has led many instructors to discover different instructional methods mediated by technology after spending many years in a face-to-face classroom. At this point you may be wondering, is there a way to get the best of both worlds? If you think that a blended learning approach could be a solution, we recommend using this hybrid course map to outline your learning objectives, assessments, and learning activities. You can also hear from other UNCG faculty about their experiences and best practices teaching a hybrid course at UNCG. We also recommend reviewing this resource from Wichita State University for more information about designing a blended learning course.
  • Blended Teaching Spaces. UNCG is excited to offer two fully-equipped spaces for instructors to engage in blended learning. While many classrooms now feature a camera to capture instructors and/or students for use in Zoom or Panopto, Stone 186 (classroom - reservation information) and Stone 169 (Video Conference Room - reservation form) have been built for optimal blended learning. ITS Learning Technology offers additional support and information about Stone 169 and other media production tools at their website. You can also request more information or assistance with any of our classroom technology by contacting UNCG 6tech
As always, we encourage instructors to request a consultation with the UTLC team to begin planning your blended course.
