While the state budget process is not yet complete, and a final agreement between the Governor and State Legislature is expected in June, this proposal represents a positive step forward. If maintained in the final budget, SJSU will be on even stronger financial footing heading into the next fiscal year.
In announcing the May Revise, Governor Newsom acknowledged that California’s investment in the CSU has produced measurable results: stronger graduation rates, increased enrollment, and lower student debt burdens. We appreciate that recognition and remain proud of the work happening across our campuses to expand opportunity and student success.
I thank the faculty, staff and students – including Ma'Kayla Akin and Teairra Brown who joined us in Sacramento this spring – whose advocacy has helped us be able to report this positive development. We will continue to emphasize the need for investment in SJSU. I also want to express appreciation for our legislative partners, including the 48 legislators who joined Assemblymember Mike Fong this spring in advocating for additional CSU resources beyond the Governor’s initial proposal.
At San José State, we will continue to approach our planning with both optimism and fiscal discipline. The work we have done over the past several years to strengthen enrollment, stabilize our budget, and build a financially sustainable model has positioned us well to navigate uncertainty while continuing to invest in our priorities.
Advocacy efforts also continue on several important fronts, including securing one-time deferred maintenance funding and expanding affordable student housing resources, both critical priorities for our campus and the CSU system.
As always, I remain committed to transparent communication and ongoing engagement with the campus community as the state budget process moves toward final approval in June.
Thank you for your continued commitment to San José State University and to our students.
Sincerely,
