back to school: supporting youth mental health and relationships
As the back-to-school seasonapproaches, it’s essential to remember that while this time can be exciting, it can also be challenging for many students. From adjusting to new routines to managing academic pressures and social dynamics, our youth face various stressors that impact their mental health.
Youth Mental Health: The transition back to school can evoke a mix of emotions. Some children might feel excited, while others may experience anxiety or stress. Encourage open conversations about their feelings and reassure them that it's okay to seek help when needed. Creating a supportive environment at home can make a significant difference in their overall well-being.
Youth Relationships: Navigating friendships and romantic relationships is another critical aspect of youth development. These relationships can shape their self-esteem and future interactions. It's crucial to educate them about healthy relationships, respect, and boundaries. Help them recognize the signs of unhealthy relationships and empower them to make positive choices.
YWCA Clark County Prevention Program: Our prevention programming emphasizes working with youth to stop violence before it starts. We know that young people are particularly susceptible to dating violence as they develop their sense of self and create norms for their future relationships. Through our Prevention Advisory Board and various programs, we empower youth as leaders in changing norms around violence in relationships and communities.
