This past June was the 156th anniversary of Junteenth, a day that marks when the news that slavery was abolished finally reached Texas. Recognition of the holiday has grown in recent years and has culminated as Juneteenth has become an officially recognized national holiday!
Here, in Newark, thousands of families, organizations, and companies commemorated Juneteenth through art and music performances, informative presentations, marches, and other community events. At KIPP Life Academy's Juneteenth event Director of Youth and Family Education, Ms. Sarah, helped students plant sunflowers, zinnias, peas, corn, and lead a game called "guess that seed" where they were challenged to match seeds to their seed packets. The event included food from local vendors and a community dance from a local DJ. Students celebrated their previous week of learning about and discussing the history of Junteenth and the meaning of freedom.

Warm weather and summer break means there's more time for Spring festivals!
Since April, our education staff participated in a number of Spring festivals celebrating the changing seasons, urban agriculture, and STEAM education. We coordinated four school garden festivals at our Farm to School sites; Lincoln Elementary, Avon Ave Elementary, Hawthorne Ave Elementary, and Harriet Tubman Elementary, by partnering with organizations Rabbit Hole Farm, Newark Public Library, STEAM Urban, SNAP-Ed, Apiary in the Sky, and the Newark Community Street Team children were able to explore their environment and participate om hands-on science learning.
Children participated in activities like creating Mother's Day butterfly cards-- that actually fly!-- making fruit juice sorbet, planting and taking home annual flowers, garden-themed storytime with children's librarians, and learning about fruit tree life cycles at Sandy's Orchard.

Family Fun in the Kitchen is back!

Our monthly Family Fun in the Kitchen program is back and better than ever! Local vegan chef, Afi Green, has taken over this monthly cooking program with her inaugural lesson making delicious tofu skewers! As the oldest of 9 siblings, she has learned how to create delicious vegan dishes on a budget. Afi has intensive experience as a chef, from owning and operating her own cake shop in Kansas City, Missouri to her newest venture, DIY Kitchen Diaries Vegan Cooking Classes, which she started in late 2019.

Second Saturday Family Adventure
| |
For Second Saturday Family Adventure this month Ms. Sarah was joined by Ms. Owens of Newark Public Library, Springfield Branch, leading a very special Leap into Science lesson based on wind! Leap into Science is a national program from The Franklin Institute that integrates open-ended science activities with children's books. Children and their families learned together in the garden by creating air rockets, designing wind detectors, and testing the power of an air cannon.
Look out for next month's family adventure on July 10th where we'll be exploring "The Wonder of Water"!
