Our heartfelt thanks to State Farm for the event support and for the $20,000 grant to help better prepare Central Floridians for the upcoming hurricane season, which starts on June 1.

Prep your yard for the growing season
As we enter another spring in Florida, you may notice that your plants are ready for a little TLC after being dormant for the winter. Taking advantage of the beautiful weather to do some extra maintenance on your landscaping will make for a happy yard.
- Tune up your lawn mower: When was the last time you changed the air filter or oil? Just like a car, lawnmowers need regular maintenance to keep them operating.
- Fertilize: If you own a Habitat home, you likely have Florida-friendly Bahia grass in your yard. While it doesn’t require the extensive amount of watering that St. Augustine does, it will benefit from a treatment of fertilizer in early April. Be sure to look for a fertilizer brand that is formulated for Bahia grass.
- Prune: Finally, check on any shrubs and small trees you have in your yard. Many varieties benefit from light pruning in the spring, once any danger of frost has passed, so they can have healthy growth during the spring and summer months. Be sure to trim away any dead growth from the freezes we had during the winter to help this process.
Check out the University of Florida’s Extension Service website for tips on keeping a happy lawn, gardening ideas, and what grows best in Central Florida.

Simple budget-friendly ways to improve your home
Have you ever found yourself watching HGTV and thinking you would never have enough money for a home makeover? Being a homeowner myself with a family of 5 and on a strict budget, I have found easy and enjoyable ways to update my space.
Fatima’s 3 tips to update your space on a budget:
1. Shop resaleWe’ve all heard the phrase, “One man's trash is another man’s treasure.” Don’t be afraid to purchase an item that someone once owned. Check out places like Facebook Marketplace, Goodwill, Salvation Army, etc. You can take an old item and make it look brand new with a little bit of elbow grease and some paint.
2. RepaintPaint goes a long way! Painting your cabinets, walls, or furniture can change the look and vibe of your home. You can go from shabby to chic or modern to farmhouse with just a coat of paint. Before you settle on a color, get a few samples and do a test section to figure out what best fits your aesthetic.
3. Replace hardwareUpgrading your faucets, doorknobs, shower heads, and cabinet handles can elevate the look of your home without the cost of a full remodel.

How to store your important documents
Natural disasters are unpredictable, but you can be prepared to ensure your important documents are safe and secure. Whether you're a homeowner or a renter, consider investing in a fireproof, water-resistant, portable storage container that you can grab quickly in the event of an emergency.
Documents that should be securely stored:
- Birth certificates and social security cards
- Retirement policy
- Passports
- Wills
- Property deed and car titles
- Insurance policy
- Medical documents
- Marriage, death and divorce certificates
