Spring 2024

From the Department Chair

Dear alumni, friends, and supporters:

This is my first opportunity to share the Department of Marketing news as the interim chair. As a brief introduction, I've been a Clemson marketing faculty member for 13 years. I grew up in the South Carolina Lowcountry and am a proud Clemson graduate (1994). So, I'm excited to be able to support the Department in this role. The Department has had a busy Spring 2024. Of note, the Department sponsored the following:

Marketing Research Symposium — Our fourth symposium brought together over 50 faculty and Ph.D. students from 10 universities to discuss academic research. The keynote speaker was Vanitha Swaminathan, a professor of marketing at the University of Pittsburgh and an editor for the Journal of Marketing.

Marketing Research Week — Our first research week, which featured six marketing research professionals and a marketing research competition, exposed students to careers in marketing research. Over 90 students participated in these events.

Careers in Marketing Night — Ten panelists from various industries shared their insights into marketing-related careers with over 70 students. This event was designed to help students choose their preferred marketing emphasis area, a new initiative for Fall 2024.

Student Industry Trip — Twenty-five Marketing Student Advisory Board students spent a day learning from marketing professionals at four companies in Charlotte, North Carolina.

As I write this, the Department is preparing for:

The 14th Annual Tiger Paw Classic, a student-run golf tournament. In its history, this event has raised over $300,000 for charities and scholarships and is a great hands-on learning experience for numerous students.

Honors and Awards Day allows us to recognize marketing majors who excelled during their time at Clemson.

The May graduation of over 350 Marketing majors, including 27 graduate (M.S.) students. This is always a bittersweet time as we say goodbye to students we've gotten to know so well.

This is but a short list of the many great things going on in the Department, things we couldn't do without the generous support of our industry partners, donors, and others. Thank you! If you're looking for opportunities to contribute, either financially or by giving your time to support students and faculty, please let me know. We'll find ways to get you plugged in. And when you're next on campus, feel free to stop by to see the Department and say hello. As always, Go Tigers!

In April, we welcomed the newest Marketing Student Advisory Board members to the team! This group of board members will represent the marketing department within the Wilbur O. and Ann Powers College of Business for the 2024-2025 school year and serve as a liaison between the students and faculty.

Faculty Spotlight

In February, the Clemson Marketing Research Symposium brought together a distinguished lineup of scholars and Ph.D. students from various universities to discuss the latest trends in marketing research. Learn more about the Marketing Research Symposium.

M.S. Marketing Program Update

Student Spotlight: Emily Brown

Emily Brown shares her memories and experiences at Clemson and in the M.S. Marketing program. Brown currently serves as an IPTAY Premium Hospitality assistant and plans to work as an account executive at Cleveland Cavaliers post-graduation. Student Engagement

Marketing Student Advisory Board Industry Trip

In February, the Marketing Student Advisory Board organized an industry trip to Charlotte, North Carolina. During this visit, marketing students had the opportunity to meet with brand representatives and tour corporate facilities for brands such as the Carolina Panthers, National Gypsum, Honeywell and Ally Bank.

Careers in Marketing Panel

Within the same month, the Careers in Marketing Panel brought together a talented lineup of industry professionals to discuss career emphasis areas and the latest marketing trends. Students were able to ask questions and network with the speakers. The panel included professionals working in fields of market research, advertising, sales, experiential marketing and sports.

CU Insights Research Week

In March, a creative inquiry class led by Anastasia Thyroff, Ph.D., hosted CU Insights Research Week to celebrate careers in market research and data analytics. Over 70 students attended brunch-and-learns, a panel discussion, and a research competition with faculty members advising each team. Learn more!

Students Selected as University Innovation Fellows

Clemson students Megan DeGrezia, Hayden Roof and Brianna Sebastian-Olazabal were selected as University Innovation Fellows. This global program empowers student leaders to increase campus engagement through design, creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship. Dr. Scott Swain renewed as Powers Distinguished Fellow

The Wilbur O. and Ann Powers College of Business renewed the recognition of four Powers Distinguished Fellows for their remarkable contributions to research and their commitment to academic excellence.
