George Washington Carver reportedly asked God to explain to him the mysteries of the universe. God said, “That is a bit beyond human understanding. Try something a little smaller.” Carver prayed, “Okay God, would you reveal the truth about the peanut.” God said, “Now that is more your size!” Carver came to understand the mysteries of the peanut and he gave that gift to the world.
Paul discovered the mystery that Gentiles could become believers as well as Jews. God called him to spread the news so that the whole ancient world would hear the gospel of Jesus Christ. As the church in Ephesus and other places understood God’s amazing grace and resurrection power, they preached the good news to others. Who hears? Paul says even the rulers and authorities in the heavenlies have been put on notice by our preaching. God is on the move.
In his doxology, Paul says, “Think big!” How big? How big is your God? Sometimes we reduce God to a manageable size. Imagine if God were big enough to explode our expectations. Our minds are finite, but God is infinite. How can we categorize God? To whom will we compare God? Our God is able. He is able to do abundantly more. He is able to do more than we can ask or think. This limitless power lives in us, the church. Shouldn’t we give him glory? We will. Forever. Amen.
