“Do you trust me?” Disney’s Aladdin was a “whole new world” to us as we raised our young sons. I loved the vocals in the animated feature. In one dramatic moment, the street urchin Aladdin extends his hand to the Princess and asks, “Do you trust me?” The audience feels mixed emotions about the young man’s request. Is he really trustworthy? We want him to be, but is he?
The Psalmist expresses deep confidence in God. “This I know . . . the Lord gives victory to his anointed.” To this day, some place trust in the power of horses and chariots. By contrast, the Psalmist invites us to place our trust in the name of the Lord. Either way, our object of trust determines our destiny. Those who trust in their own resources stumble and fall. But those who trust in the Lord rise up and stand firm.
Do you trust God? Has some past or present experience caused you to doubt him? Be sure to doubt your doubts. View them critically. What do the scriptures like Psalm 20 teach us about God? How has he proven faithful to you? If I close my eyes and remember my childhood church experiences, the song I remember my mom singing is this: “Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him! How I’ve proved Him o’er and o’er! Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus! O for grace to trust Him more!”
