You're invited to a BLTN Zoom meeting Thursday, January 12 with two focuses. Professor David Wandera (MA '08, MLitt '13) will present on "Immigrant Youth Literacies" for first half of the meeting. In the latter part of the meeting, we will support one another to develop proposals for NCTE 2023. (See below.) Come with an idea, a draft of a proposal, or just a willingness brainstorm with peers. BLSE Summer 2023: BLTN Fellowships Posted; Applications and Re-enrollment Open |
Summer 2023 program dates and fees are posted, as are special funding opportunities, including fellowships and scholarships. A link to the Summer 2023 course catalog will be posted shortly after the holidays. Please note we are also offering some options for online study.
We encourage students to submit their re-enrollment form early for the best campus selection and access to financial aid and special funding. Financial aid applications are now available, with aid awarded in two rounds to admitted students: one in February and one in April.
We hope that you will join us this summer. Share with colleagues!

NCTE: Proposals for Columbus, Anaheim Highlights
|
|
|
We think the 2023 theme of NCTE, Conexiones, is right down the center of the BLTN strike zone. Please consider submitting a proposal by January 18, at 9 am Eastern. For the 2023 gathering in Columbus next November 16-19, Bread Loaf plans to have a reception and with your help we plan to have BLTN well-represented. (Join us for that Zoom meeting to prepare.)
Speaking of "conexiones," it was great to see some of you in Anaheim last month!

On December 3, BLTN teachers Heather Jones, Evelyn Begody (MA '02), and Monica Rowley joined an interdisciplinary and international cohort of experts and educators to discuss educational approaches to the global specter of nuclear arms. The BLTN teachers were invited by event organizer Masako Toki, Senior Project Manager and Research Associate at the James Martin Center, and director of its Critical Issues Forum. The Kathryn Wasserman Davis Collaborative in Conflict Transformation provided support for the gathering.
Each teacher returns to the classroom and to BLTN with new awareness, new educational strategies and resources, and new connections across institutions and disciplines. Of her experience, Rowley, of Philadelphia, writes, "I think the Critical Issues Forum offers a space for my students to learn more to become engaged global citizens. I also can see the work carrying into BLTN partnerships and collaborations." Begody, from Window Rock, on the Navajo Nation, comments, "...[T]o have two speakers present different ways on the same topics reinforced and drove concepts home. I really loved the content of scholarly approaches on how to decrease tension and give peace a chance...." And Jones, in Louisville, remarks that "What Professor Netta Avineri shared on the topic of Intercultural Communication can be applied to student work on a broad range of topics." NextGen Youth to Headline South Carolina Council of Teachers of English Conference |
| |
BLTN NextGen Youth from the Aiken and Louisville sites will be keynote speakers on the second day of "Building Bridges and Raising Voices," the annual conference of the South Carolina Council of Teachers of English to be held in Myrtle Beach, SC, January 13 and 14, 2023. "I am very excited that Next Generation youth will be featured keynote speakers at the South Carolina Teachers of English Conference," says NextGen Aiken Mentor, Kayla Hostetler. "If we sincerely want to embrace educational practices that uplift and center youth, we must provide spaces and opportunities for them to lead and engage in these conversations. Youth are often left out of the dialogue surrounding best educational practices. I truly believe that listening to our youth and working alongside of them can improve the field of education."

Staying Connected: Join Erin Tabor and BLTN Teachers on Media Literacy |
BLTN Fellow Erin Tabor has prompted us on BreadWeb to consider resources and approaches to Media Literacy. Find the discussion in BLTN-General group on BreadWeb. Erin gives some context on a free source she is using with some success and asks, "So what about you? Do you teach media literacy? If so, what are some strategies you use?" (If you're a BLTN fellow from previous years, and would like to request a BreadWeb account, contact Tom McKenna.)
