A Note from Hitinder Gurm
Virtual site visits have been an important way for us to stay connected during the pandemic. Members of the Coordinating Center meet with teams at participating hospitals for an opportunity to ask questions and share ideas. We value site feedback on what makes participating in BMC2 valuable to you, and how we can better support you in your quality initiative efforts.
We appreciate hearing your suggestions for ways that we can direct our future work in quality improvement to continue to positively impact cardiovascular care for patients across the State of Michigan. It’s also an opportunity for us to hear your successes and collaborate to share them across the consortium. We look forward to continuing this practice of site visits and meeting with those we haven’t yet met over the coming months.
Michigan is truly one of the safest places to receive cardiovascular care. Throughout this month's newsletter, you’ll find examples of this, including a new best practice protocol, a feature on vascular surgery’s collaboration with Michigan OPEN, and information on a video that highlights BMC2 versus national data. THANKS for all you have done, and continue to do, to make this the case for patients across the state.

BMC2 Vascular Surgery Partners with Michigan OPEN to Reduce Opioid Prescriptions
Michigan OPEN’s mission is to change the trajectory of the opioid epidemic, finding transformative solutions through research, engagement, and evidence-based actions. BMC2 Vascular Surgery collaborates with Michigan OPEN to develop prescribing recommendations for patients who undergo vascular surgery procedures. In addition to working on prescribing guidelines, Michigan OPEN does community outreach, Naloxone training, helps patients with transitions of care, informs policy, and more.
At our most recent vascular surgery meeting, Mark Bicket, MD, PhD, FASA, Assistant Professor, Anesthesiology and co-director of Michigan OPEN, gave the presentation, “Optimizing Pain Relief After Vascular Surgery for EVAR and CEA.”
Dr. Bicket explained that in order to help patients through their recovery with fewer opioids, we need to give them some additional training. It’s important to help patients understand what the process and procedure are going to be like and to set expectations around their procedure. Continue reading.

New Video Highlights BMC2's Outperformance of National Averages
BMC2 collects data that helps inform quality improvements to PCI care and the State of Michigan performs at levels that outpace national averages. BMC2 hospitals have higher rates of aspirin, statins, and all recommended medications prescribed at discharge. We better document radiation use during procedures and use less radiation overall. We also perform fewer blood transfusions after PCI and have more referrals to cardiac rehab. These achievements are highlighted in a brief video describing these performance measures and the impact they have on patients. The video is available on our website and our YouTube channel and has been posted on our social media channels. We invite you to view it and share it with your colleagues and patients to demonstrate the amazing results we achieve when our teams share what they have learned and grow together.

NEW - Imaging Educational Series
BMC2 seeks to create a library of archived cases to be used for training purposes. Do you have de-identified images to share? If so, this an opportunity to contribute to BMC2’s ability to share and discuss ways to improve appropriate use of imaging during future meetings. This will lead to improved procedural and patient outcomes after PCI. Please contact the Coordinating Center if you have images or are interested in leading and participating in this initiative.
