FLAS (Foreign Language Area Studies) Fellowship Information Session
Wednesday, January 13, 12-1pm, Zoom

FLAS Fellowships are awards for graduate students concentrating on modern foreign language and international or area studies in these 3 regions: East Asia, East Europe, and Middle East. The FLAS Fellowships provide Academic Year Fellowships for language and area studies coursework on campus during the 2021-22 academic year, and Summer FLAS Fellowships for language study on campus or elsewhere (domestically or abroad) during summer 2021. All applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and cannot be beyond the fifth year of graduate study while holding the award. PATHS Career Conversation: Katrina Powers, La Lumiere School

Join UChicagoGRAD for a virtual conversation with Katrina Powers, a PhD alumna of the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures who is a Spanish teacher at La Lumiere School in Indiana. She will discuss her current role, career journey, and give her advice for graduate students who are interested in entering the field of K-12 education. RSVP here
 
Diversifying Faculty in Illinois (DFI) Fellowship Information Session
Thursday, January 14, 3:00-4:00pm, Zoom
The goal of DFI is to increase the number of minority full-time tenure track faculty and staff at Illinois’ two- and four-year, public and private colleges and universities. The DFI Initiative works to increase the number of minorities with master’s and doctoral degrees by providing financial assistance, based on demonstrated financial need, for students to complete graduate degrees. A DFI Fellow must be an Illinois resident (for 3 years) and U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident alien who is a member of an Underrepresented Group. Black/African American, Hispanic American, Asian American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander. Applicants in all academic disciplines are eligible. Applicants must be pursuing a doctorate or master's degree. Applicants must plan on pursuing a career in teaching or administration at an Illinois post-secondary institution or Illinois higher education governing board.     Global Hangouts Series: Cross Cultural Discussion Group
    Friday, January 15, 8:00-9:00am and 5:00-6:00pm
    UChicagoGRAD, International House, and the Office of International Affairs presents Global Hangouts: a series for connecting with fellow international graduate students. This series includes three events, held twice per day. The cross cultural discussion group is a chance to share more about who you are and where you come from with the international graduate student population currently located all across the world.  RSVP for the events here, and feel free to register for both sessions per day! 
    Quarterly Postdoc Workshop: Overview of the Academic Job Market
    Friday, January 15, 3:00-4:00pm CT, Zoom
    Are you interested in academic jobs? During this workshop, we will provide an overview of the academic job cycle, covering the following topics: demystify what the "academic job market" actually means, the timeline of applying and interviewing, the variety of academic positions available, and the application package. This workshop is in collaboration with the Biological Sciences Division's Postdoctoral Association. RSVP here.

    GGI Pitch Your Own Internship Program Info Sessions

     Are you interested in designing your own internship for this summer and receiving a $6,000 stipend to work with an organization of your choice? Applications for UChicagoGRAD’s Pitch Your Own Internship program are now being accepted for summer 2021 internships. Come to this info session to learn more about the GRAD Global Impact Internship "Pitch" Program. We’ll discuss program requirements, how to craft a strong application, and take questions.     Graduate Writing Consultations Now Open for Scheduling!
    Graduate Writing Consultations will operate on a new schedule for Winter Quarter. Students may request appointments up to three weeks in advance. Master's and Ph.D. students who are interested in working with a consultant are encouraged to check the UChicagoGRAD advising website regularly for newly released appointments.     Opportunities with the Writing Program for 2021-22
    The Writing Program is still accepting applications for opportunities in 2021-22 until Wednesday, January 27th at 12pm CST. Graduate students from all departments and divisions are encouraged to apply for renewable teaching positions. Once hired, Writing Program staff receive practical training in writing pedagogy, along with continued support as they work with student writers.     Maroon Step Challenge
    January 11-March 14, 2021, VIrtual
    UChicago Recreation is proud to present the inaugural Maroon Step Challenge. Our goal is to help create a regular habit of movement and exercise throughout the Winter Quarter while improving the overall health of the UChicago community through friendly and fun competition.
    Participants will be asked to track and log their steps over the course of 9-weeks (1/11/21 to 3/14/21) as they participate in activities of their choosing, suggested ste) and/or any of our three TBA “Signature Events”.  Registrants will record their steps via the platform of their choice (e.g. FitBit, iPhone Apple Health, Samsung Health, etc.) by 11:59 pm each Sunday in IMLeagues throughout the competition.
    Registration is FREE via our UChicago IMLeagues website and open to all UChicago students, faculty, staff and alumni between now and 11:59 pm on Friday, February 12.  Competition will begin January 11.

    Library Services to Support Remote and Hybrid Teaching
    Tuesday, January 12, 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. Online
    This program provides a comprehensive overview of Library services that support teaching. Learn to design research assignments students can successfully complete in an online environment. UChicago librarians will share ways to create assignments or projects that make effective use of the Library’s online resources, including ebooks and ejournals, audio/visual resources, and primary source collections—even rare books and archives from our Special Collections Research Center. We’ll also highlight ways librarians can teach your student effective research skills via live or asynchronous programs. Registration is required
     MLK Commemoration Celebration
    Tuesday, January 12, 6:00pm CT, The University of Chicago’s Facebook page and YouTube channel
    Please join us as we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and reflect on our collective responsibility to work towards a more equitable society.   Isabel Wilkerson, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author of Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents, will offer the keynote address.  The program also features performances by the Chicago Children's Choir and Timeless Gifts Children's Choir.
